I must say watching our defense whiie sitting in a beach chair in florida is much better than watching it in Indiana.

Distance does take some of the ugly off, doesn't it?

Tom Davis wrote a good column about the struggles of the past two years, calling the on field results unacceptable. I agree.

That was my biggest takeaway and is my biggest worry. Given the state of the defense this may go on for awhile and negate all the good Pete has done.

Not to derail the thread, but I feel BSU athletics as a whole are on a downward trend. A few years ago on bsufans, we had a discussion about whether our current crop of coaches in the sports people watch (football, women's volleyball, men's and women's basketball, baseball and softball) was the best collection of coaches ever assembled at once here. Well, let's take a look at where we are now:
Football: Lembo's first three years were fun. We won games we didn't expect to win in '11 and '12, and '13 was great for the most part. Everything post-Wenning has been…well, meh.
Women's volleyball: Shondell brought a spark to this program that it desperately needed. His first two years were great. I'll admit I'm not too close to everything happening here, but looking at the team's schedule I just don't see the results we envisioned when he first arrived. Four out of five years we've been one and done in the MAC tourney, and we have yet to reach the final game. Regular season results have been 14-2, 12-4, 7-9, 12-4, 11-5 and this year 3-3. We got an at-large bid to the NCAA tourney in 2011 because the league was so tough. I feel like we haven't really been close to that since then. We lost no one from a year ago and I remember reading that we brought in the top recruiting class in the MAC. So why aren't we better?
Men's basketball: no need to go over all our problems here. Whitford is trending down. Hard to argue with 12-48 and continued off-court problems.
Women's basketball: NIT appearances are nice…I guess. Better than the last place finishes Packard brought us…I guess. No real excitement or momentum here either, it seems.
Baseball: just like the women's volleyball team. MAC tourney no-shows more often than not.
Softball: this is the one sport where we've been successful despite changing coaches. Most successful sport at BSU in the last decade.
Do I expect too much? Will we never be great in more than one sport at a time since we're a mid-major, or does the problem lie within? I just feel like we don't get players/athletes that other MAC schools get because there's some kind stigma of "because we're Ball State" that's holding us back. Muncie being a shithole doesn't help, either.

Muncie being a shithole doesn't help, either. Women's volleyball is dealing with a couple injuries forcing a lot of freshman to step up, and they've been surprisingly good despite what the record indicates. The women's basketball team has an excellent chance to make a run for the championship this year having only lost one player to graduation. Baseball: Showed up last MAC tourney strong despite questions. Lost to one of the best pitchers in the country against Ohio, so not too much complaining there. Womens soccer is off to a 7-2-2 start with 6-0 in MAC play for the first time in their history. Men's volleyball tends to be consistently good, but hasn't been championship caliber since like forever ago. I get what your saying, but I would say many sports have been on the upward swing the last few years: Baseball, Softball, Women's Basketball, and Soccer.

Hard to argue with 12-48 and continued off-court problems. 12-48 is a bad recent record, but I do not see Whitford trending down. Very hard row to hoe the first year, record poor last year but a lot of adversity to overcome, injuries inexperience and academic trouble for talented freshmen, lack of depth and talent overall. Lack of experienced talent and lack of numbers, suffering injuries last year, we had to expect trouble. Given some good recruiting, I'd say the trend is quite likely up. We probably have more talent this year than we have had for the last decade. And most of it is young. I'll wait on the results this year and next, but I'd bet each of those years we improve substantially over the last two, then we talk about the trend! Overall, I like the stories with other sports for the reasons others have given. Football is down, compared to a VERY good performance for a few years. Still, most did not expect a great season this year, and it is not all bad as that plays out. We have actually seen some good young players develop better than anticipated, and if the QB situation is as good as it looks like it will be, we are not so far from a return to the top of the MAC. Not sure all this is a trend, although as fans we want so much more and are disappointed with losses. We can see the negatives too easily, perhaps.

The NIU game was tough to watch, no doubt. But it's been tough to watch for the last 7 years. It got too tough for me, this time, after we recovered a fumble and the ball was returned to NIU. I could feel the momentum stolen from home. I wonder if that one will be reviewed at the home office.
RE: the state of Ball State athletics; sliding into mediocrity isn’t fun for anyone. Football can’t get both sides of the line to fire at the same time. Need we mention choking in the bowl games? Basketball is so painful, a friend living in Indy who has maintained his season tickets for nearly 40 years didn’t come to a single game last year. I can’t get too excited about golf and tennis. Wish I could. Maybe then I’d have something to cheer about.

Basketball and football (possibly volleyball) must fuel the resurgence if there is to be any.
