Certainly the defense didn’t play very good in the first half. Lots of missed tackles, etc. However, we have been significantly better than last year. We’ve only given up more than 30 points once this year (38 to IU). We were giving up 50+ every game last year.

Now we gotta get the offense along for the ride.

Yeah the offense isn't clicking too often. Running game, to me, has been a disappointment this year

CMU made a mistake on the roughing call and we made CMU pay for it. That is what good teams do to win ball games when they re not playing their best. They take advantage when their opponent makes an error. We did that today. We ARE improving. Keep it going guys. You could have thrown in the towel on this one but you came back and won. We are turning into a good team.

well ive been driving all day but I listend to the game then stopped and watched the last couple minutes.. The good thing is we would have lost that game last year. The bad thing is we will not win many more playing like we did today. We were lucky with the late roughing the passer call and then anderson dropping the easy pick could have been killers but its better to be lucky than good.. A road mac win is like gold and we got one today

Wasn’t home to watch the game live. Tuned in for replay at 9 pm. By the half I was ready to turn it off, figured we would lose big. Went to check out the final score before going to bed - what a surprise! Finished watching the game and went to bed after midnight. Good win on the road. If the Cards can put together three quarters of good football they can get to six wins. Four good quarters and they blow teams away. The “D” has really improved. The “O” is struggling. Without Riley Neal we would be in deep Sh... The “O” line needs to step it up!

I have to give Dunner a shout out today as his pass catching was outstanding!

This game will go a LONG way in convincing the team that they belong. Young team have to learn. The Cardinals went to school today and learned a great lesson. Let us hope they take it to the heart.

losing sucks but pre season even the most negative of us said this season should be based on progression not wins and losses. Through 7 games we have been involved in what 3 or 4 1 possesion games. As far as win totals most said we were looking at 3-4 so we are on pace for that. We will not beat anyone else on the schedule playing like we did yesterday but we can and have played better than that. The improvement of the D is almost shocking. Gotta get the offense playing better. Our Wr's have been dissapointing at best and the oline has not been great

The good news is we are not getting hosed and giving up the game, except maybe the IU game, coming after the big week at ND, maybe not surprising. Hard to bring an emotional performance two games early.
And also, we knew injury and lack of depth could hurt us this year, especially up front. The receivers and running backs were thought to be stronger, but you can't score running the ball without some room. They don't get a clear path all that often.
Receivers, we probably need a little length and need to go get the ball more aggressively, do better on jump ball situations.
Hmm, this sounds like a basketball post...

It doesn’t help that Riley is always sliding sideways and losing the pocket. It looks like he he’s shuffling backwards/sideways all the time. Drifting in the pocket was mentioned by announcers. He looses his “throwing platform” that way too when he’s going backwards while drifting sideways. I think some of his wild throws are because of that. Even in his td to Miller yesterday you can see his feet shuffling to that side.
Some of the sacks are definitely on the oline. But I think some are also on Riley drifting and losing the pocket. Drifts into the pressure at times or away from protection and gets tracked down from behind. He’s not good at feeling the pocket either. He was more accurate yesterday but everything is short throws.
No, the WRs don’t help because they can’t get open vs man press. Overall the passing game isn’t nearly as productive as it should be with the qb we have and WRs we have on the roster who unfortunately can’t get themselves on the field.
As far as the run game, the running lanes aren’t there and we don’t have make em miss runners, so they need those lanes. Lack of deep threat in the pass game and poor oline play = safeties and linebackers who can cheat up and stuff the run. End result is the struggle to sustain drives and get in the end zone. The redzone is a danger zone for us.
Gotta be very frustrating for a much improved defense to keep getting stops only to have the offense regularly give it back after 3-5 plays. How good could we be if we had an offense😧 No way we can beat wmu/Toledo/Miami/emu etc scoring 24 points. It’s just not going to happen. The d can only hold so long. (And what is the deal with the absolute refusal to make a play on the ball by our dbs, along with their lame whiffs on tackles?).

Winning covers a lot of stink. Winning does cover a lot of stink, but it also allows time to fix/eliminate some of the stink. Some of it I don’t think we’ll be able to fix this year, need some serious depth at several positions. The win gives the boys some confidence for sure. Side note, not that he hasn’t before, I think I saw a vein on coach Neu’s neck when he was discussing a call with the ref during the game. Not that I want a hot head for a coach, but liked seeing that especially for the players. Excited for next weekend, Go Cards!!!

This is about accumulating talent. You need 2 or 3 good classes, then may have to wait until some those guys physically and mentally mature. Depends on what you have to start with too.
If you are real lucky or good, you might get enough physical talent to fit just the right places and do it sooner, but 3 years is just about the minimum time to really rebuild if the cupboard is bare to start with. This is why Rob is always saying you give a coach 4 years. Probably then reach a baseline level. From there you can have one bad year recruiting and survive it rather easily, or at the other end even have an exceptional one and be so successful you change jobs...
The other thing here is that Neu had essentially no HC experience at this level and the odds were low he'd be a great HC out of the box anyway, compounded by the lack of experience making it pretty hard to assemble a great staff team and get everyone on the same page without a year or three under his belt. It all adds up to some pain.
5 wins this year would be awfully good (that would be 2 upsets out of 5 games). 4 wins when you have odds of winning each game at or below 1 in 3 is probably par for the course. Maybe 50-50 we win one of the next 3. Then a maybe 50-50 we win another if we don't suffer injury and continue to make slow progress.
