Today was interesting to say the least and it all started with the tailgate confusion. I spoke with a few people including Mark Sandy and this change was made by a lady in student affairs and the communication of the change was not handled well at all. Along with myself many parents, fans, and recruits found themselves in a frustrating situation. I can tell you for sure that the lots will open at 11 am next week 4 hours prior to kick off for family weekend. The games after that sound like it will go back to 3 hours. The music that was played today ( one song really) was pretty bad, I am a pretty easy going person and it takes a lot to offend me. I know that college kids will be wild and crazy at times and that does not bother me in fact sometimes I find it fun to watch. The parents tailgate is in a lot that is pretty seperated from the student area and I really dont see or hear much that goes on in that area and have never had a issue before. The song they were playing was offensive and played very loud and could be heard no matter where you were in the parking lot. I dont have a issue with music and the kids having fun but at some point a line needs to be drawn. Today was a huge inconvience for tailgating and it didnt matter if you drove 5 hours or 5 mins, the change was not handled well. With that said lets move on to next week and hope the coaches/team can make the adjustments needed to bring home a win against CMU. The team has won the last 4 games against them and we all would love to see that be 5 next weekend.

Why is someone in student affairs making that decision?

Awesome that athletics can't set their own policy.

This is the most Ball State thing ever. If there's a way to get people to stop coming to games, BSU will find it.
Back on our old site a few years ago, I remember someone talking about his experience at a basketball game where one of the ushers was nagging him to get out of the row he was in while he talked to a friend because it wasn't his seat. We only had about 10,000 empty seats at that particular game, mind you.
Does anyone ever have fantasies about Ball State finally "getting it" and having athletic programs that are run well, games that are well attended, facilities that are top-notch and administrators who aren't stupid and don't try to piss people off?

Why is someone in student affairs making that decision? Student affairs should be involved. The communication and overall coordination of the event should NOT have been in their hands. But, Sandy and his staff and Alumni Office had to have screwed this up too. If it was in SA hands, everybody should have still known and made sure the word got out. We have had 3 hour tailgates before. Worst Game Day mistake in years.

Why should student affairs be setting the time?

I was there and in the mess as well. Huge cluster and no excuse for this. I also found a new parking spot to stay away from the frat who has the DJ Jazzy Jeff starter kit.

Why should student affairs be setting the time? Anytime you mix alcohol, students, and the public, you have potential problems and Student Affairs needs to be involved setting the length of the tailgate and starting time, how it is managed. Length of the tailgate is related to both practical maintenance of order in the tailgate area but also in the stadium. Most of the adults who come for football drive to the game, may bring family, want to meet others and socialize, and they actually want to see the game, not just party and get hammered. That is a bigger problem with students. A bigger party is attracts more students, a plus, but a longer tailgate means a longer party and that certainly means more drinking. So we want students to have a good time, but we also want them safe, want them to go to the game, and even stay for the second half, gasp. Is the draw supposed to be more the drinking and the party or the game? That balance may be the question I suppose.

I dont have a issue with student affairs making the call to change the time, the problem is they did it on a weds and no communication was passed along to the rest of the fans. Lot will open at 11 am next week for sure.

Don't even get me started on the Ushers in Worthen Arena. As a student, they want all the students to sit in the "nest." By far the worst seats in the house. I refuse to sit there so, I move to half court and sit up high and every time they try to argue with me about sitting in the nest. They once even called their manager to remove me from my seat, and I told him that until you get a sold out crowd, I will sit where I want. I think they might have had some staff changes after that, because I've never seen that usher again. This is just one of many negative encounters with the "yellow jackets" over the past three years, and to think I'm paying their salary with my tuition....

A student section for the student tickets is not so unreasonable. I used to have season tickets I paid for under the basket. So, I think you exaggerate, maybe not the worst seats... I also disagree you can sit anywhere you want. Season ticket holders should not ever have to chase somebody from their seat even if they come late. I have seen that happen and don't feel a lot of sympathy for the student who says he can sit anywhere in that case. You aren't going to sell the more expensive seats without guaranteeing a reserved seat. However, you are right that ushers should be courteous and reasonable. (So should a student ticket holder... The usher is usually just trying to do their job, and in a lot of cases like this unpleasantness is a two way street.) Anyway, I don't see why they make a fuss about your sitting in GA anywhere in the building as long as there is no conflict with a paying customer who doesn't belong in the student section. And that is true even if there is plenty of room, if someone holding a GA ticket wants the seat he should get it.

Which is why I usually sit high up in places were people are unlikely to have tickets.

Lot will open at 11 am next week for sure. Student affairs shouldn't be setting the time. The attempt, at communicating the change, is really only a small part of the problem as there is no way possible to adequately notify the fan-base to begin with. The mistake was changing the time schedule mid stream, a freaking ten year old could have seen the resulting debacle coming. Overall the administration at Ball State is a joke, and has been for the last two decades.
