I agree with Farva. All this NFL talk for Neal is WACK!!!!!!! Tell me what has he done to attract NFL teams?...Next to Nothing!!!!!! He may a great guy but he has not shown me he is a leader or he has NFL skills. Both Davis and Wenning were on winning teams and racked up some impressive wins and stats. I just have not seen that from Neal. I remember walking out of Northwestern's stadium when Neal was a freshman thinking we were set for years of excellence at that position and he never advanced and matured much beyond those Freshman QB skills. I truly hope he finds a system that shows his skills that two coaches at Ball State could not.

I know that's not the end-all-be-all of stats, but it's a fairly good indicator of skill level. After 4 years, he is what he is. Best to wish him well, see him off, and hope the next guy up can put it all together.

Riley makes one read and then gets happy feet and wants to run. The staff wants a pocket passer that runs after all the reads are covered. Neu and Riley could never Mesh and Riley could never become a pocket passer

Not near as disappointed as others are on losing Riley and James, don’t think we lose that much

To me it’s more alarming than disappointing. Recruit well enough and you can replace those guys. And we’ve played significant stretches without both already.

Its alarming because it shows at least in Gilberts case there is some locker room dissension.. On the field both can be replaced

I think this is a case of Riley wanting to leave town with all the news about his dad earlier this year and so on as well as the team did not succeed he might just want to get out of town and reset.
To the main concern, Neal did not live up to what we all thought he was going to be. When you realistically look at it, it's a huge disappointment. I think this is a good thing for the program. Now there is no attachment to anyone.
Gilbert seemed like he was starting to become a locker room problem, so I don't mind seeing him leave and we have a lot of RB's that are plenty capable of taking the rains.

Lets be honest none of us here are casual fans. We would be what most would call the nerds/superfans/donors/insiders where ever each one of us fits. The casual fan gave no shits when the first round of transfers happened.. When you lose two "big name" players though it brings the much greater audience of casual fan into the Mix. That brings more heat and pressure to Neu and the what is going on at Ball State questions start popping off. It was cool when it was us arguing with each other on here. Know its becoming a black eye to the masses

No doubt about that - it does make waves, especially to the casual fan who doesn't know that the 5th year rule makes it so easy to try a new program for a year and end up like Russell Wilson. Personally, I think, no matter how this year went or his relationship with the staff, Riley was leaving for his 5th year. His performance this year just dictated who would look to add him. Gilbert on the other hand, that is a totally different story. So does this mean that a team at or above the level of Ball State views Neal as their starting QB next year? If so, good for him. If he sits on the bench at a bigger name school I’m not sure how that helps his NFL draft stock. Many of our fans don’t feel he should’ve been starting for us, so what do other teams see in him that our fans don’t see? Regardless, this is a poor reflection on our football program. Obviously Neal believes that Ball State failed to maximize his potential despite being the starting QB and given every chance to prove himself on the field. If he is such a great QB, why was our offense so mediocre at best? I’m still a little confused. Help me understand Cardtalk! I wish I had a good answer for you. I think there are teams out there, even P5 teams out there, that are willing to take a chance on him. He has the measureables that make coaches drool. And he has had times where he has played very well and times where he has struggled. It's a gamble for sure, but for the other programs, it is only a 1 year gamble. I think there are offenses that he can excel in that fit his style more. I don't see him being a great QB at .. say ... Wisconsin. But he could excel at Northwestern, which has an offense that fits the spread option attack, dink and dunk short to intermediate throws, throw downfield 3 times a game, style that Riley seems to be geared for. As for draft stock, I look at it like this. If he transfers and starts ... good for him, he may get in the league from that. If he transfers and sits .. it is no worse than staying here and having another mediocre to above average year - either way he would not be drafted.

Some truth in there about Riley. The local boy does good story turned into local boy does sorta good and now his dad’s in trouble was probably a problem. Better for him and the program if he just moves on now. Don’t know if Gilbert was actually a problem or not but obviously he and Neu did not see eye to eye.

This is a great discussion. I appreciate eveyone’s opinions. It will be interesting to see what happens in the coming weeks. More transfers? Any coaching moves? New recruit prospects and commitments?

Well it kinda sucks but it does keep us engaged and talking.. One thing I will add is the early signing period is in a couple weeks but we have all the way until february to fill the class with 2019 kids.. Jucos and transfers we have until summer so it might be a process
