So at least 3 games from now. And then we have no idea if Hazen’s back will hold up.

OK, so let's speculate about a kid that hasn't played much. Hazen has, by all accounts, a chronic back injury that could recur at any time.
If he comes back for Akron and plays the rest of the season he'll have about 15 games under his belt.
Going forward, can you afford to devote a roster spot to a kid who might never be able to play more than 15 games a season? Especially considering the number of red-shirts we seem to have each year?
Surely you want to do right by the kid and half a season lost to injury is no reason to make a hasty decision, but if the medical forecast is gloomy, how long do you hope he'll able to play?

That’s a very good question. If this thing can continue to flare up and there’s potential for real damage then it seems they ought to seriously consider having him take a medical retirement and finish college still on scholarship. I’m not sure we want to do this the next couple years. I’m not sure he should take the chance.

Biggest thing is uncertainty. This injury is one that could recur, but he has also played full speed for a few years without a problem before this with that injury. Can we fill his roster spot if we wanted to be "safe" with another player who could give us more value than that 15 games? Which could be 25 good games. Tough call. Can we find a big man on short notice, for example?
