I've been a BSU basketball fanatic for 40 years and season ticket holder for 30. I've been a supporter of James Whitford until now. I heard and read your criticisms of the various reasons for dislike of the coach but thought many of them were a desire to return to the Glory Days of the 90s; I, too, desire that, but I don't see that happening, whomever is the coach.
I thought last year was going to be the year to bring us back to prominence, but then came Zach Hollywood's suicide, suspensions of Tyler and Walker and the demise of Kiapway. Those things had to wear on the team. I excused Whitmore for the February swoon saying unforeseen difficulties derailed our year. But this was going to be the year to get us back to the top 2 or 3 MAC teams. We started off well, even with Trey's surgery and recovery. We lost to Purdue and Virginia Tech by just 9 points each. We ranked as high as #60. We were on our way. We started the game at Toledo strong and dismantled anything the Rockets tried to d do. We dominated that game.
We've gone 4-8 since then. Yes, we've had injuries and and I excused some losses due to them. But reality is setting in. We have no ball handler on the team. We have the second most turnovers in conference play. Our offense ranks 10th of 12. I see so much potential in Teague, but we don't seem to have a plan for him. There is no way he should have been permitted to chuck five threes last night. He is a career 26% from 3. He is so athletic but underutilized. How many times have we seen KJ drive into traffic and get his shot blocked or a turnover? How about our turnover/assist ratio. Our assists have diminished in conference. Or Tayler trying to do too much?
Where are the fundamentals? Blocking out, attacking the press, handling a zone, free throw shooting.
I have no confidence in this coach. I love our players and the effort they are putting forth. I just don't that Whitford can get us where we want to go. Time for the excuse making to stop.

It’s what we’ve been saying and seeing for 4 years now. The new ad’s hands are tied right now due to Whits contract but she’d be interested in your feedback all the same, especially with you being a long time season ticket holder. You aren’t alone. I imagine many more will jump ship after this season.

Gotta agree...and absent a strong run in the MAC I'd strongly consider a change....my concern is not losing a pretty good group coming back with two pretty good looking Redshirts and two strong guard recruits.
If we made a move we'd almost need someone immediately to step in { like pre selected } to limit or prevent players leaving in my view. Otherwise with our salaries we could end up with actually poorer results and find ourselves right back in the same spot in 4-5 years...

Kids are always going to hoot and holler about their coach being fired. Very few would follow through and leave.
And even if they would, you can't let the players blackmail you into keeping a bad coach or making a bad hire (someone from the current staff). Not saying a current assistant wouldn't be a good HC, just that you don't let the players feelings make that decision.

Hazen and Walton can't go anywhere with the five to play four rule, Teague might be leaving anyway, and everyone else who cares. We should be able to replace all of them after one season.

We can wish but it won’t happen. After next season who knows.
Whit is a good man. Just not sure he’s a good head coach.

He could have been on a couple of Tourney teams had he stayed. He was conference Freshman of the Year, and the best he could do was a Ball State team that a total train-wreck. What kind offers do you think Gunn or Ish are going to get ?

No I’m ready to be done with Whit, but his contract and our thin budget won’t allow it. I just want to be sure to differentiate Whitford the man from Whitford the coach.
He recruits good players/good players but not enough of the right kind of players. We’ve all lamented the lack of balance, lack of shooters, lack of ball handlers, and lack of alphas.
