An early Sunday morning comparison. Using the last 12 years and 2 coaches with 6 years each.
This is certainly enough data to draw a rational conclusion.
Overall MAC 84-99 44-52. Taylor 88-102. 41-65 Whitford
OK, ok....we all know these guys always have to dig out of a turd hole left by their predecessors....so, let’s only look at their last 4 years:
Overall. MAC 64-58. 32-32. Taylor 76-54. 37-33. Whitford
You could say we are MARGINALLY better with Whitford. Or, you could say Ball State Basketball can only achieve a (best case) 50% record no matter WHO steers the ship.
Our 12 year record is 172-201 overall and 85-117 in Conference.
Beth can throw darts at the wall and find someone to perform to this level. Just maybe Whitford is as good as we need 🤔

No. I refuse to believe we can’t do better. A savvy AD should be able to discern talent. There’s got to be coaches out there who want to coach a BSU and can get us to the next level at least occasionally. I’m not saying every year, just occasionally.
And no, Whitford has not elevated the program significantly from Taylor, as the record shows. We might have a few better players but we are not any better coached.

Wasn’t there a lower level championship coach from the Louisville area who wanted the job when Whitford was hired? He actually sounded good back then but didn’t have the “pedigree.” All he could offer was championship coaching experience.

Never heard exactly what those issues were. But yeah all that guy does is win. They’ve only been ranked #1 in d2 this year.

2 lessons in not extending a coach prematurely, especially for a basketball program that can't wipe away 3 years easily. At least when Buckley was extended, there was some justification for it although at that time missing the Big Dance was a bit disappointing.

Yeah so we went out and hired a Sean "Thug Ball" Miller lackey instead. As always our decision makers are the best in the business.

Oh and guess who is about to lead Duquesne to only their second 20 win season since 1980. How long did 00 tell us it would take to turn that program around ? I don't think year two was his answer.

Numbers don't lie and based on Tarheel's thoroughly researched data, Whitford is our guy going forward😁

Jeff Neubauer who was the head coach at Eastern Kentucky at the time, appeared for several days like he was going to be our hire - until Whitford's name came up late.
Neubauer later got the head job at Fordham in the Atlantic-10, which at the time was a conference several notches higher than the MAC. His last four years have been as follows:
2015-16 = 17-14 overall, 8-10 conference, CBI 2016-17 = 13-16 overall, 7-9 conference 2017-18 = 9-22 overall, 4-14 conference 2018-19 = 11-18 overall currently, 2-14 conference and assumedly will be let go after this season. Meanwhile the MAC has risen 2 spots above the Atlantic-10 in conference rankings like KenPom.
Doesn't look like we missed the boat at all in passing on this candidate.

Considering who was doing the hiring, it doesn't surprise me he picked the wrong guys to bring in for interviews. I wonder if Sandy even spent time on it, or just took the advice of some cheesy search firm.

Sandy came from EKU. Surprised me then that he didn’t go for Neubauer. Must have been money because, knowing what we know now, the Colonel would have taken the “easy road”.

Bill Scholl hired Whitford. Sandy wasn’t here at the time. Scholl left before Whit coached his second season.
I never wanted Neubauer. Davenport at Bellarmine is who interested me the most. But who knows how far Into the precess those guys got.
