rm look at three posts above you^. Great minds think alike. A major flaw in hiring coaches is that many ADs hire cheer leaders not COACHES. In other words, TEACHERS that explain in simple terms what has to be done to defend (ie fighting through a screen, etc), taking HIGH PERCENTAGE shots (not throwing up threes willy nilly), and other basics many coaches either ignore or DON'T KNOW. Many of these athletes only know dunks and three pointers. They are in dire need of a true coach. I really feel we could find an enthusiastic TEACHER/ COACH that could meet our needs in the small college ranks. We do not need another big school assistant. These kids wouldn't have known Whit when he was named if he bit them on the ass. So we hire a small college coach. How fun would it be to see a young staff REAALY teaching young hungry players how to play a team game? A staff that would go to where the students live and gather to have live radio programs and have real interaction with the students to attract them to the games. To me coach is almost a sacred word. It means a mentor, a teacher, a counsel, an adult that sets parameters, sets goals , and keeps you on a path to meet those goals. We need a Coach. Kids want a real Coach. Many have NEVER had a father. Wouldn't it be great to have that kind of a person added to the Athletic Department to head our basketball program? In the name of fairness, let’s be clear about something. Whitford is many of the things you just described. He is a mentor, a teacher a counsel and someone who sets goals and he cares deeply about his players. I just don’t think he’s particularly good at motivating or adapting. He’s also a flawed recruiter who has not brought in tough minded kids other than Persons. Since the death of Zach Hollywood, Whitford has become even more quiet, lenient and introspective and it has de-nutted him as a coach. He’s also largely oblivious to basic things that most savvy coaches know to do like starting your seniors at the last home game or taking them out for a final bow at the end. He’s socially awkward and virtually invisible in the community. But I do think he has been a good role model for his players and sets a good example the majority of the time. He just hasn’t won enough and his recruiting philosophy and system will not work here or anywhere. He’s an assistant coach but not a great leader, IMO.

Nope he is someone who pretends to be that.

He may be a nice man and I will take your word on that but, he is woefully short on soooooo many aspects of being a complete coach including COACHING basketball and recruiting which are the two main reasons he was hired! I wish him no ill will but the circus is over and it is time to take down the tents and move this one ring act to another venue.

I’m not defending him in most of the areas that are important in coaching and I am one of his harshest critics as you are aware but in this respect He gets high marks. Whitford is many things but he’s not a failure as a mentor.

He is just a lazy feckless bullshit artist.

Players play hard for someone who mentors them that they respect - we were a passionless and lazy team most of the year. What about his "mentoring" of Tyler? Again, I'm not arguing hard here because I don't pretend to know anything other than I see, but what I see on the court on gamedays would indicate he is not doing a good job at any of that stuff.

This program has all the hallmarks of teams that don't get after it in practice. I'll bet any amount Whitford allows these guys to just go through the motions on a daily basis.
