I wouldn't go for co-coaching, it might make it more complicated to hire outside Whitford's staff when BSU can afford to buy Whitfords deal out. The Matt Painter situation was different. Essentially he was brought in more as the heir apparent to a respected coach.

100% agree. Hiring assistants from your highly successful program coaching staff has something to say for it.
Hunsaker, or Ray to a lesser degree made some sense. Although Ray was a gamble and a bit of a low-ball hire by an AD trying to smooth over a controversial firing. We won that gamble thanks to Bonzi.
Program in trouble? Then hiring an assistant? Turn around? No.

Bonzi contributed but Ray's first championship had more to do with Hunsaker's recruit Steve Payne (and his 17/9.5 inside production) than it did with Bonzi. The next three years with Bonzi were quite disappointing. Ray's post-Bonzi recruiting rampage is really the primary reason Ray can be regarded as a successful coach. But just keep posting your pronouncements. By sheer volume you're bound eventually state something not erroneous.

But even with the enormous volume of posts I'm not holding my breath for a post that ever makes any sense.

His initial success was related to Payne. Never said different. Without Bonzi we would have been in trouble to sustain reputation as long as we did. He made Ray's career in many ways.

It just dawned on me that we could tap into some of that Coors sponsorship money and bring in Keith to negotiate a buyout. Anyone know if Whit likes beer?

Payne was unquestionably the leader and warrior of the 1995 team. Bonzi was a solid contributor, no question, but outside of his freshman and senior year, Bonzi ran amok under Ray’s loose leash. Ray’s hiring, while he was a longtime Big Ten assistant, was intended to smooth bad feelings over Hunsaker’s firing by bringing back the hometown hero who had first put our program in the map. The years after proved him to be a great recruiter, shaky game and lockerrom manager.

Well looky here... Ray, along with Ron Hunter, whom I’ve nominated as our coach TWICE, are going dancing again. Why I’m so happy I could just whistle Sweet Georgia Brown out of my arsehole!!

The years after proved him to be a great recruiter, shaky game and lockerrom manager. Stuff like Jerome Davis being a drug dealer and Ray bailing him out of jail in the middle of the night. Roland and the stuff he pulled. Guys flunking out and other guys always on the brink. Tracy dildy told me one of the guy’s Gpa. Omg. You had to try hard to get that low. (Might have been Roland). A bsu cop told me he spent a lot of time talking to the guys, like Bonzi, trying to keep them out of trouble. He also told me Steve Smith was up to all kinds of stuff. Ray was lowballed on purpose and Tim Buckley was hired for a purpose. The administration had become embarrassed by all the shenanigans. But damn we had some ballers.

At one point Ron Hunter said he was offered our job but turned us down when Billy Taylor was hired. At the time I thought he was too much of a used car salesman clown. I think he still is, but he takes his teams to the NCAA tourney.

I believe one Indy tv station even announced Hunter as our next coach after the Ronny debacle, but he backed off due to someone getting in his ear about racism in Muncie/BSU.
Wonder who that could’ve been?

Wonder who that could’ve been? He claimed Ray told him not to take the job. However I don't believe he was ever offered. I liked Hunter at the time, but that whole situation soured me on his character.

Bsu people denied he was ever interviewed, or at least never offered the job. He came off as simply trying to get a raise. On the old board an insider insisted Brownell was taking the job when Ronny was hired. Supposedly a press conference was even about to be scheduled. So many strange occurrences with the bsu job.
