TJ Otzelberger? Does that name remind anyone of anything? Possibly something literary?
Anyway, this story tends to disprove my suspicion that "James Whitford" is acutally Tim Buckley after cosmetic surgery.

I guess none of you numb nuts have read The Great Gatsby. Dr. TJ Eckelberg ? I sort of try and forget that novel, having been forced to read it on three separate occasions. Never understood why it is so widely assigned in both High Schools and Universities.

I actually believe Buck is a pretty good judge of talent and a decent recruiter....not sure the best bench coach.

I actually believe Buck is a pretty good judge of talent and a decent recruiter....not sure the best bench coach. Two out of three ain't bad... I actually agree with those first two attributes, but will just say I thought him to be a TERRIBLE bench coach. If I had a dollar for all the play-out-of-timeout failures the Tim Buckley School of Overcoaching turned out, I'd have probably been a supporter of the Pass Plan!

He may be a good recruiter as an assistant, although I'm not sure how one would go about verifying that.
But his recruiting as head coach fell off a cliff at BSU compared to his three predecessors. And before anyone starts with the excuses for him, advocating for and protecting your program against dipshit administrators is part of recruiting. If instead you agree to keep quiet and act as a figurehead while your program is emasculated, then I don't consider you a good recruiter. I consider you a gutless weasel who trades the health of your program for your own job security.

I consider you a gutless weasel who trades the health of your program for your own job security. Sometimes even a lion cannot defeat the dipshit administrator. Dealing with administrators is an occupational hazard. Not only did he have to deal with a lot of administrative change, some wise, some not, but some of the admins, including Bubba, were not as interested in basketball as I would have liked. Too much of the time. Neglect and disinterest from above hampered him.
Possibly a good coach, but not much stomach and/or head for playing administrative games.
It is an arcane craft, and running in the opposite direction from an administrative job makes some sense. I was sympathetic with that up to a point. Buckley was not very good at it, but he did fight. He picked some of the wrong battles, and had no sense of how to work around some areas of disagreement where he could have. The changes he needed to make in recruiting were sometimes things that we probably needed to do. But sometimes....
He did not solve problems, sometimes when he might have.
