Well Kids camp, I was only there for about an hour but there were a couple tidbits worth noting.. We have basketball lots of Basketballs. Coleman was my sons coach for the day. Super nice kid, Kids loved him. He shot a bunch of threes while fooling around with the kids. His stroke looked good and he made a lot more than he missed. Of course no pressure or D of any kind. Acree was there and he and Coleman played a little game of one on one. Coleman had no chance guarding Acree at one point Acree went up went between his legs and dunked on colemans head. It was nasty nasty. Acree did not shoot the ball well during their little game but broke coleman down and went to the basket when ever he wanted. Coleman hit a couple threes. Hazen was there moving well and dunking. Ish was present and shooting well. Teague was there but did not really do anything. Sellers came back to speak to the kids.
Oh yea Thompson was there so I guess that means they figured out a way he could stay on the team.. Did not see the freshman or KJ. Mallers walked through but did not work the camp from what I saw

Day two was a traumatic experience I had to work so I was unable to attend until the last hour. When I got there they had the kids split up playing 5 on 5. I am watching max play the 2 spot and notice he is just camped out standing near the three point line. I also notice he is not making any attempt to rebound. I was angry at his lack of effort. Then it dawned on me I was watching the Ball State Offense.. 1 guy pounding the ball up the court and trying to make something happen. No attempt to offfensive rebound and no blocking out on the defensive side. So I sat my rage at my son aside on the way home I ask so what were you doing out there. He replied exactly what my coaches told me to do.. Ahhhhhhh it will take me months to undo this

Gotta start them young to learn the Whit System. Sounds like he’s got it down pat by day 2.

And, I would ask a coach about it before you despair. My guess is the lack of effort is not what is being coached.
Maybe the spacing is?

The first thing an intelligent, observant person notices when coaching youth sports is that some skills and concepts that are important, or even vital, at college/pro level are a complete waste of time for younger age groups. Teaching these things just confuses, bores and frustrates both the players and the coach.
A lot of bonehead youth coaches are in total denial of this concept. You can win a lot of games as a youth coach by understanding this. You will also greatly increase the enjoyment of the season by both the players and yourself.
Not sure if this is totally relevant to this thread, but it make me think of it.

What I said is true but I really do not care just adding some humor to the slow season. The camp has been fun for the kids it is really well ran and I have no real complaints...

These idiot ''coaches'' don't even know what a chest pass is!!!!!!! How about setting folding chairs a few feet apart and teach these ''minds full of mush'' on how to weave the chairs by switching hands while dribbling around them. Fundamentals?...the coaches are frauds. Tell me, how do you, as a coach, (if one can use the term) tell which nine year old if ''the man'' to ''create'' while the four others on the floor stand around with their fingers up their collective asses? How much do we pay these imposters? Who hired these ''cheer leaders''? I am so tired of bringing up time after time but it needs to be said. The term ''COACH'' in my mind holds a sacred place. I was coached by four hall of famers plus an AD that is a member of the HOF also. They all (save one) emphasized fundamentals. They were teachers. We as athletes learned something new EVERY DAY in practice despite what Allen Iverson said. That's right Iverson ''We're talkin' 'bout practice''. Many of these imposters these days would not know a fundamental if walked right up to them and bit them on the ass.

Agree that you can't expect a lot, youth coaching especially.
My daughter has a pretty useful youth shooting camp, over in Richmond I think. Very specialized.
These college camps are motivational, not sure they do a lot more.

The camp is really good its 9 to 4 everyday and while I have been there a couple hours Max has told me they do a lot of drills.. I know they are doing the figure 8 dribbling drill and different passing drills. He did say that when he tries to rebound the taller kids just out jump him so I asked if he was blocking out.. He had no idea what blocking out was. My son is not basketball star at all but one would think that after 2 seasons of school ball(Delta) 1 Delta camp and now 1 BSU camp some one would have mentioned Blocking out. It was one of the first things we all learned so yea it does seem like some fundamental things are being skipped over but its not just at this camp. Listen I kind of feel bad because my posts intent was more humor based. This camp has been a good time for the kids

Sounds to me like we need to organize a movement to have the camp shut down. Since Calhoun is the strongest advocate for terminating the camp I elect him our leader.

I admire the firm stance you've taken with the need to shut this terrible child labor camp down.
