I'm going in with low expectations. If we have a good season I will be enraptured.

Joe was drinking when he made that prediction! It is not going to happen with Whitford.

Lunardi must believe the MAC is going to totally suck this year. For us to win it? And be a 14 seed?
Yuck.

Guys, guys...it was all a big misunderstanding.
He meant 14-seed in the MAC tournament.

Lunardi must believe the MAC is going to totally suck this year. For us to win it? And be a 14 seed? Yuck. The 14 seed is consistent. The MAC should be down. Still. BSU winning the MAC seems to assume a dog fight with Buffalo and a couple of other teams losing out. Since all this speculation would be a matter of trying to guess who plays 3 games well in Cleveland at the end, it is a crap shoot it is true.
I can see the logic that there is not a dominant team. UB will be less likely to play that role, have a tougher time this year than the last few years. I like their talent enough to say that is still a team that can win it though. True, a coaching change might make it harder. Maybe he is assuming they lost a really good coach, not just a good recruiter, and a new HC needs a year or two under his belt.
The other better teams don't seem to me to have any more talent overall than we do. I certainly don't see a season long dominance by BSU where such success would have to be due to better coaching than the others more than anything else. I see several coaches who would seem to be better bets if that is the rationale. If he is impressed with our talent level, OK, but it's not overwhelming talent and for us to really be that good, it has to be used correctly and we will need a change in style of play. Unless we are all wrong about our shooting and half court play.
Hey, it is all about the MAC tourney.
Could easily see a middling team win in a wide open tourney, a team that really gels as the season goes on. More likely one that just gets unconsciously hot at the right time and has enough athleticism and depth for 3 games in 3 days.

There is one way, and one way only, that BSU goes to the tourney next year: the total catastrophic collapse of the rest of the MAC.
There are some reasons to believe the MAC may be down but nothing that suggests a total collapse. Teams that finish 11th the previous year and lose their go-to scorer and most consistent inside presence don't typically follow with a ncaa tourney appearance. Particularly when it's a one bid league and the team in question has a coach who has proven to be totally inept in the conference tourney.
This Lunardi projection is clearly a case where a national media person puts all their effort into the prestige conferences and then quickly and offhandedly fills in the blanks down the page. Standard operating procedure.

There is one way, and one way only, that BSU goes to the tourney next year: the total catastrophic collapse of the rest of the MAC. Right now I don't see a MAC team that is all that much improved. Last year there was a dominant team that could play a relatively bad game in the tournament and win. That is the big difference. I don't see that this year.
Maybe I'm wrong, we will all look at it more closely as the season gets near, but it looks like a lot of teams with close to equal chances.
Last year we had a number of teams, including BSU at the beginning of the MAC who were about equal, had about the same potential to win. But all less likely than UB.
BSU, for reasons often discussed here, crashed and burned, and after that never recovered to be among the 2nd tier at the end.

Yep, it always comes down to Three Days in Cleveland.
I always enjoy your optimism, but I'm just not seeing it, given our past track record in the factors highlighted above that it would take to push us into the NCAAs. I noticed you acknowledged this downthread. Here's hoping we're both wrong!
