Wow, How athletic and fast would Shafer have been without those injuries? He was already a beast.

Knew Shafer well as a student athlete and I have always said he was the greatest athlete I have ever personally known.
I have known many a professional athlete over the last 53 years since my BSU student days.
The guy could touch the top of the backboard and more importantly was the quickest jumper I have also ever seen.
He was slightly over 6’ 2” tall.

I used to study in the “men’s gym” in the late afternoon and I think Shafer had a cast on his wrist and couldn’t practice with the team....he would stand flat footed under the basket and dunk with the other hand.

True Story Pretty funny and you do realize Suggs was from Elkhart Central HS and Kemp from nearby Concord HS albeit years apart in age! Must be the water in that area!

I knew Kemp was from concord he was a few years older than me but we played against each other a few times in some tournaments. The reignman nickname came from the lore i mentioned above. I did not know Shafer was from elkhart though

When Shafer played at Elkhart (pop. 50,000) there was only one high school in the city and it was the second largest in the state behind Indianapolis Tech. The Blazers would dress 85 or 90 players for home games at Rice Field. When they entered the field they looked like Alabama coming out of the locker room. It took then a long time to empty their blockhouse of those damned blue uniforms. They had the new school that housed the juniors and seniors plus the sophomores attended classes in the old high school called the sophomore division. In those days Elkhart was a force in ANY sport you played against them. Elkhart recently voted to return to one high school for the city but they are changing their names and colors. No more Memorial or Central.
