Riley is getting a lot of preseason hype. Preseason projected All-Mac WR, and today listed on watchlist for Biletnikoff Award for best WR. He has been praised for his route running and good hands. Congrats to Riley on this great honor and recognition. I hope he can live up to these high expectations.

He does run great routes and catches everything.. If its third down and you need a big catch he is our guy. He also has a knack for getting open in the redzone. If we use him in these ways he is and can be a great weapon for us. What he is not is a an outside number vertical Wr type. 300 of his 800 yards came from that two game stretch against WKU and Kent who's defense was as bad as ours. We are lacking that alpha number 1 vertical guy right now. We need Yo heinz or someone else to claim that role. If we can find that coupled with Hall/miller/dunner we will have good receivers and some good RBs.. We then need to see if Plitt can play at a higher level/need to see the oline play well and we need to see how the coaches call the game. If all is pretty good we can have a good offense capable of winning some games...
But we still have that one problem Defense

Didn't we have a ton of preseason hype from this type of stuff last year? It seemed like everyone and their mother was on some type of watch list or named to some preseason collection of honorees.
Well, we know how that turned out.
Here's hoping Riley's actual season lives up to his preseason hype. That would be a nice change of pace.

Our vertical guy was Hazelton who is doing very well at Virginia Tech and has pro scouts interest for sure!

A vertical guy who was often wide open that Neal just could not hit.

A vertical guy who was often wide open that Neal just could not hit. I saw some preseason SEC QB ranking on bleacher report yesterday from their media days. Riley was ranked 11/14. Thought that was odd because.. 1) I guess he’s definitely the starter 2) That’s a higher rank than I thought 3)11th best SEC QB is the equivalent of ? best MAC QB? 4) Did our coaching staff really not fit his skill set?

The SEC is a great conference, obviously, but it is not known for having lots of great QB’s. This year there are a couple top QB - Tua and Fromm - but Neal listed as 11th the best QB in SEC is not surprising to me at all. From what I’ve read, he’s the favorite to start at Vandy, but there is a QB battle so it is not a given. Hopefully he can stay healthy this year and have a good season.

Good points, 11th when there are probably 6 or so who are either known to be lower rated or uncertainty surrounds them.
His success depends on a coach using him where he is strong. And of course pass protection.
He should kick ass against weaker teams they play have trouble against middling and good teams.

My guess is he will do exactly what he did here: struggle to read defenses and not trust his arm downfield.

But as hmh said, he’ll look like an nfl prospect against the lesser teams. But struggle vs the better ones.
