Hey Kid,
Scanning the box scores for the two games, I notice Walton, Coleman, and Huggins didn't play in either game. Is that correct and if so any obvious reason? Are any of them injured?

Just looking at the box scores and not actually seeing the game I noticed a few things
Bumbalough 35 minutes played so far and only 7 shots going 3-7.. 2 assists 3 turnovers
Thompson 44 minutes played 2-9 shooting so far 7 assists 4 turnovers
We worried about Luke being able to get his shot off is this proof? Thompson just not a great scorer
Hendricks game 1 22 minutes 6-9 16 points 5 rebounds. Hendricks Game 2 against better comp 1-4 2 rebounds
Mallers 30 minutes in one game 1-5 shooting for 2 points 1 rebound.. Thats what the end of last season looked like
Teague well through 2 games he is 0-8 shooting threes. Still has the Green light.. Why Whit Why..
Hazen decent first game 9 rebounds 12 points played 12 minutes second game nothing. Much like last year
KJ DNP ankle Missed time last year with an ankle injury . Is this a thing?
Gunn 1-5 with one three a few rebounds... Same thing as last year
Thomas 23 minutes one game 3/6 with one three 5 rebounds. could he be the wild card
Acree 35 minutes 4-9 one three 6 rebounds 5 to's
Kroft the forgotten recruit 54 minutes 8-17 (1-7 from three) 19 points 2 rebounds 7 steals.. Did we hype the wrong kid
Ish 45 minutes 11-18 (5-9) from three.8 reb 2 assits 30 points.. Is Ish taking that step
Coleman DNP
So in a nutshell We still have PG questions as a team We still do not shoot threes well
Thomas and Acree seem to add athleticism and depth. We need one to really step up
Surprising stuff from Luke Kroft and Hendricks. Luke needs to shoot more. Hendricks might be better than we thought and is this the real Kroft

Yes, Bumbalough hasn’t shown anything yet but the other two freshmen have. At this rate Kroft will definitely play and Hendricks has a good chance. Will Huggy Bear ever be anything?

OK, I’m not sure of the reasons you go to Costa Rica in the summer to play basketball when your school can’t afford to keep the lights on....but why would you go all that way to play 3 freshmen the majority of a game? Wouldn’t you use this opportunity to try multiple combinations of your new and existing players to determine who fits well together?
Maybe we’re determining which of the new recruits can play against D1 caliber competition? Oh wait, that probably can’t be determined in this event.
I’m pretty certain, no matter the outcome, that our 2019-2020 performance forecast can’t be gleaned from this money-frittering exhibition. Maybe future recruiting will be enhanced from dangling a Central American vacation and donated snacks and sammiches in front of potential signees?

Here is what’s interesting. I see the team play and they would definitely compete in the top half of the MAC based on tonight’s performance and Sweep not seeing them play from his couch knows better? Who is truly crazy??? Now, I know for a fact that Ottawa went largely with their top 5 and we played 3 Freshmen the majority of the game but of course that means nothing!! Tomorrow’s game will be challenging again. Ottawa has a history of beating several D 1 teams here in prior years. By the way, I find that Ottawa was 15-8 and 3rd last year in their conference and according to most people I’ve talked to they have been a top program for years in Canada. Look at their record the last 5 years!! I looked at their record the last five years and the only D1 team I see them beating is Canisius in an exhibition game in 2017.

We only had seven turnovers (likely the best ever under Whitford), so I wondered why we didn't blow these guys out. We were out-rebounded 45-27 and allowed these guys to grab 15 offensive boards. Combine that with only 5 assists and you can quickly see the same issues as last season.

Shooting as poorly as we did, and playing poorly for more than a half, the issue isn't about failing to blow them out.
It's more how did we survive and win.
I trust the kid whose eyes saw the game that the opponent played well and we were only playing well for the last quarter. Stat sheet confirms that on several counts.
Hope we show better tonight. Guess I'd rather have the poor game now than in November, we can learn from it.

August after a poor game on a summer trip a little early to write the team off. Don’t know that he wrote the team off, but he did point out that the stats trend to exactly how we played last year. That is, giving up a ton of offensive rebounds and having very few assists. So we’ll see if that trend continues in the regular season or if it’s who we are. Pretty concerning, even for an exhibition game, that Luke and Josh had 2 assists in a combined 40 minutes.

Its to early to draw any conclusions but based on these two games as a team we are still horrible at shooting threes but yet we shoot a lot of them. Ish seems to be the only consistent guy hitting anything. The few games he played last year he shot the three pretty well as well. He needs to be able to keep this up and get help from someone else.. We know Luke can shoot it so someone needs to figure a way to get him more shots

I’ll be interested to see if we incorporate more screening during the regular season to free up Luke to do more.

I’ll be interested to see if we incorporate more screening during the regular season to free up Luke to do more. I am pretty sure they haven't really put in all the offense. But then our offense doesn't seem to feature screening away from the ball that much, except the first few years when we didn't have anybody really able to get to the basket on the drive Whitford has gone to so much P&R and that has crowded out most screening. I am old school enough I like my best shooters to get more catch and shoot... love to watch a well executed screening game.
That's my pet peeve with reliance on ball screens and P&R if you have outside shooters who are not able to drive or shoot off the dribble they get shots only when the stuff in the lane forces opponents to help and can't recover to the shooter hanging around outside. ln space and pace players away from the ball half court are just not in the game sometimes. By design it crowds out offense generated by screening away from the ball, passing, and movement to get open. That's why I think we have to push the ball and get them shots before the defense sets up.
Not sure Luke (like most other star players) has ever played in a motion offense or one using a lot of screens anyway. In HS I think they mostly gave him the ball. He handled it a lot, passed when double teamed, used ball screens. Indiana all star and AAU, and here maybe, they seem to be converting him into a PG role where his shooting threat forces the opponents to play him close and switch on screens. I guess in theory this should get others shots.
