Don't follow the situation that closely, but it seems to me that a critical factor is whether or not Neu is using his background to do some exceptionally good QB recruiting. Nope

Loss today shows us Neu & current staff may be able to get you a 4-8 season & a tie for last in the division. I can see why we give an extension.

They only want competitive. Winning championships would only be gravy As far as they’re concerned.

For 9 of 12 MAC teams that is it. 3 maybe are paying enough to say they want more.

Pay has nothing to do with demanding/expecting excellence. We talk about being competitive and “losing close” vs saying we want to play for championships. We extend coaches who’ve won nothing. They just don’t care that much.

The sad thing in the MAC is that it's a one way street for the coaches. If they win they leave even if they have a contract & if they lose they get paid off to move on. I never thought that was the way it was supposed to work.

He's not a recruiter, in case you were wondering. BSU seems to be a magnet for non-recruiters, regardless of sport. Heck, even Steve Shondell struggled in that area, and that guy was a volleyball genius.

I'd be willing to wager there is very little correlation between initial salary and coaching success in either Mac football or basketball. Outbidding other schools for the most popular candidates is not the same as intelligent hiring. More often it's just an indication of a herd mentality and acceptance of conventional wisdom over shrewd and innovative thinking

I suppose you could plausibly argue that, given how dull and clueless the relevant BSU administrators have been for the last two decades, they are better off having the herd mentality, rather than following God knows what idiotic ideas they might come up with themselves. An example may be Ronnie Thompson. My suspicion is that Gora fell in love with the idea hiring successful, famous and outspoken John Thompson's son, and therefore the usual vetting procedures, which would have quickly revealed Ronnie's sociopathic nature, were bypassed. Needless to say, Gora's yes-man lackey AD, Tom Collins, wasn't going to object in any way.
