What exactly does it mean to "know" Pennsylvania or Ohio or "the south". If this is a vital qualification, then it can surely be defined pretty definitely. Anyone can navigate these areas with a cell phone, and the talent turns over every year...so what is it that you "know"? I think this is all conventional wisdom bullshit that makes clueless, scared, dumbshit administrators feel like they are making a "safe" choice. Actually recruiting ability is all a bout energy and enthusiasm and relating to 17-year-olds. You don't need to "know" any particular geographic area if you have that. Recruiters recruit. You can be from the Kola Peninsula or Terra del Fuego or wherever and be a huge success if you have the characteristics of a recruiter. I get what your saying and think your partially right. Knowing an area or a certain coaching staff does makes things easier though. Having a relationship with Ad's, Coaches, 7v7 coaches organizers is very beneficial. Its like us getting a job, if we know someone or maybe even the boss at the place we apply we probably have a better chance getting a job. Thats why you hear so much about developing a pipeline.

How about Larry Harmon/DC University of Mary Hardin-Baylor? Right in the middle of Texas, strong stats. Check out the defense side of the roster.

Trying to pick out who we might be interested in for DC is nearly impossible as there are hundreds of options I totally agree, maybe a needle in the hay stack to a degree. Those two names belong to teams that are finishing in the top 5-10 for d2 & d3. To me there’s a DC out there, at the college level that can check off more boxes than some of the talk that’s been on this post. Jumping from an OH-PA high school to d1 is huge. My thinking lets find a guy that is up & coming or wants his chance, paid some dues. Both have experience at competitive levels. The two I’ve listed is not necessarily who I’m saying set up an interview with, but they appear to have something going on. They’re teams look like they produce.

It just isn't easy. How do we go about finding the magical recruiters the General thinks we can identify based on personality appraisal?
RMC has it right, hundreds of young coaches out there. We have to rely on conventional tools like coaching network, reputation, track record. Not casting calls to assess magic, like American Idol.
Unless that magic is shown by prior performance it's not going to be found. The "recruiter who recruits" usually surfaces as a lower level coach, a position coach with lots of recruiting success. He gets the attention of other coaches and his boss. Rarely leap frogs from HS to D1 DC. That's for sure.
That recruiting success that is proven most often happens in a talent rich area where the coach works, and more often than not by hard work and networking not just charm and personality.
Besides all that. Apart from recruiting magic to get to be a DC he has to actually coach. He'll need some exposure to management success, experience, proven success there, too.
He has to manage defensive staff. Personality alone will not do it there either. He will need to have earned respect among coaching peers. Not just show up with charm and charisma that will sign HS players he puts under his spell.

Can we compete salary wise with a departed Big 10 assistant?

According to USA Today, we're about half a million away from what Holt was making at Purdue ... based on what we were paying Elson.

Depends on if he can get a job and if he wants a job.
But I think Stockton gets promoted.

I don’t think that’s the PC way to refer to a person who’s mentally challenged any more.

Not to mention that the whole idea is highly discriminatory against intellectually challenged candidates. I'm proud to say that the basketball program does not engage in such distasteful hiring practices.
