One point was a free throw, intently missed second. An intentional foul on rebound. They missed first, hit second. Then Ace hit a three as time was running out. The Cards played two good teams tough, can’t argue with the effort. Hit free throws at a good pace in both games. If they work this hard in the MAC we could be ok. Here is hoping the Cards play with the same toughness and come away with a win tomorrow - would be a nice Christmas present for them and the fans.

It was 69-66 UTEP and we are taking ball out under our basket with 5 seconds left and I lost all power at my home. What the heck happened as we score 4 points and they 2 in five seconds to make it 71-70? Kaden Archie made Free Throw. 66 - 69 0:05 UTEP Timeout 66 - 69 0:03 Foul on Kaden Archie. 66 - 69 0:03 Jarron Coleman made Free Throw. 67 - 69 0:03 Jarron Coleman missed Free Throw. 67 - 69 0:02 Foul on Tahjai Teague. 67 - 69 0:02 Bryson Williams made Free Throw. 67 - 70 0:02 Bryson Williams made Free Throw. 67 - 71 0:01 Bryson Williams Defensive Rebound. 67 - 71 0:00 Kani Acree made Three Point Jumper. Assisted by Brachen Hazen. 70 - 71 0:00 End of 2nd half 67 - 71

Coleman has really turned into a good point for the Cards. Good, smooth player. He had 1 assist and 4 turnovers

I’m not gonna get real excited about a close loss to UTEP. They aren’t that good and That’s a team we should beat if we’re going to claim we’re any good. We aren’t getting good enough guard play. The assist to turnover ratio stinks. The guys we need to hit shots are not hitting them. 6-26 on 3’s? We got hammered on the boards. You want to compete for a MAC championship you have to flip those numbers. I’m not into “we played like crap and almost won!”

OK, if you stayed up to 4AM to watch us lose in the closing minutes, I guess I understand.
I do agree we should not be excited. Don't agree with it was so terrible. Hey we have had a couple of losses I'd put in that category this season. Not this one.
UTEP is a team of about equal strength, we shot relatively poorly, especially from 3, with our three best shooters in practice 1 for 14, but still played well enough to win, lost by a point. Can't rip the team for that. There are a few bright spots. Offsetting Mallers not up to snuff this game, we had Acree actually contribute a little something. Bumbalough continues to be disappointing shooting the ball, but he will come around. Coleman held up although forcing a few plays and turning the ball over. Teague continues to play more consistently well and this time playing against some size.

Boombala really only effective 3 point efforts were against Howard and IUPUI. He appears to need a lot of wide open space to get an accurate shot off. Maybe he will settle in with time. I’m assuming he lights it up in practice and that is why Whit is giving him lots of minutes.

Out rebounded by UTEP 21-37. Those two 6'10" paper weights on the bench sure did us a lot of good. If one could play 10 minutes a game, it would make a big difference. Especially if we got some inside defense. To me that would be the biggest contribution. Maybe more a problem here against a big center.
That rebounding stat doesn't capture the problem entirely. It is a little deceptive, and would have turned around a bit if we had hit some shots. We hit 50% the margin is manageable. We hold them to 45% we'd get more our share of defensive boards. When you are badly out shot you have to have extremely good offensive rebounding to keep the margin close. When you let them hit high percentage, you obviously get fewer defensive rebounds.

Yes, and when he hits a few baskets everything works better...but you are probably right that Whit knows he needs to give him minutes to get to a level he can be really effective. Painful growing pains for us. Josh seems to me to have regressed a little from his best stretch of play last year, too. And at best he is not as aggressive as we need to be with the ball.

Only reason we were in this game is UTEP turned it over about 25 times. They are a low level mac team at best. We scrapped never gave up but thsts a team we should beat if we want to better than mid mac

LOOK AT FAR WE HAVE FALLEN. Fans are praising a loss to a bottom feeder from another conference. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? This is not a program in transition from one coach to another, have had a massive loss of players, blah blah blah... This is a team that is in a bad basketball conference that lost to another bad team from the bottom of the barrel. We should be in a much better position after more than a half decade with the same head coach. I know he has a VERY complicated offense that takes YEARS to teach...and since our players are such idiots and are dense as a piece of granite we can't be in a hurry to win a meaningful MAC tournament game. Looking at the position we are in makes me want football to start tomorrow.

When you let them hit high percentage, you obviously get fewer defensive rebounds. This game totally exposed our problems in the front court and the UTEP coach had the players and smarts to exploit them. Their 4 and 5 out-muscled the SF we try to play at C and we don't have a PF to match-up anyone who does. The two 5's Whitford has recruited over the past 3 years to replace Moses are apparently unusable. Watch the bench; the 4 unusable parts (Huggins, Hendriks, Thomas, and Kroft) all sit together with their warm-ups on chatting about the game they are all watching.

We scrapped never gave up but thsts a team we should beat if we want to better than mid mac They is not a low level MAC team! Nor is UTEP a bottom of the barrel team. They are third highest rated team in Conference USA, which is about MAC strength.
We are mid level MAC team right now, not in the top 4. Sagarin says 4 teams are better by a point or more, but only 1 by a 3 point basket. We can fight for the conference championship.
We should always want more, I have no gripe about anyone saying that, but let's also just not exaggerate the case and claim we are a terrible team.
If in this game Mallers plays his usual game, and if we hit even 30% from 3 from our guards, which is hardly a reach, well except Bumbalough right now, we win easily. Any one of those 3 players playing a quite normal game, we win. Do 2 of the 3 consistently we are a top MAC team, we are not now, we need to improve, and can do that.
