If one could play 10 minutes a game, it would make a big difference. Especially if we got some inside defense. To me that would be the biggest contribution. Maybe more a problem here against a big center.
This game totally exposed our problems in the front court and the UTEP coach had the players and smarts to exploit them. Their 4 and 5 out-muscled the SF we try and play at C and we don't have a PF to match-up anyone who does. The two 5's Whitford has recruited over the past 3 years to replace Moses are apparently unusable. Watch the bench; the 4 unusable parts (Huggins, Hendriks, Thomas, and Kroft) all sit together with their warm-ups on chatting about the game they are all watching. Not sure exactly how you were able to observe our bench so closely, or what you want the bench players to be doing at all times. At the home games I have seen the bench is engaged as I would expect, even if they are unlikely to play.
I am surprised Thomas has not turned out to have a role, but did not expect the others to play much. All are players who have talent and during the rest of their career have a chance to be contributors. Hendricks and Kroft have some skills, but are after all freshmen. It would be a surprise if any were "usable" in more than a mop up role.

I disagree with UTEP being labeled a low level MAC team. They are equal to the teams in the MAC West. The problem last night was to me their rebounding. I thought our freshman did a lot. Losing Mallers hurt & Walton is still not back 100%. Key to our season is improvement from the freshman. Will it happen?

Here we are in year 7 still rationalizing losses and wondering why we don’t have a TRUE inside presence or point guard, and lamenting turnovers. Some things never change. We’ll be doing it again next year too. Oh well.
UTEP has beaten mostly nobodies, same as us. Are we to accept that we’re just a middling MAC team? Again. Is that ok? We go from having prized freshmen who will contribute to “they’re just freshmen, what do you expect?” Can’t develop Thomas, who was a heavy contributor at previous school? Can’t develop Acree who allegedly was whits “best recruit ever?”
What’s it gonna take?

I would take last yr's team over this one going into the MAC. How about everyone else? Hopefully this one improves which for us would be strange under Whit.

The apologists are out this Christmas Eve. Our offensive sets do not lend to offensive rebounding and rarely high percentage shots. I think calling us a mid-level MAC team in year 7 of the Whitford era speaks volumes.

I agree with many of the comments and particularly agree with Cardfan that we must turn the numbers around to win the MAC!
Poor 3 point shooting and only having Mallers 6 minutes cost us this game!
I thought Acree looked pretty good and certainly is getting better!
Hopefully Mallers sprain is not to bad

At the end of the season we will see how good we were. ''You are what your record says you are.''

I like the team, but liked the team last year, seemed to be ready, and they did start with a bang.
Different feel this time. Not clear how they'll start. I had expected this team to be a little further on, especially Bumbalough and Thomas.
But I'd trade a good finish for a good start!

Maybe this year will operate in reverse of past years and a meh start will transition to a fantastic finish. I’d take that.

It's not that we couldn't rebound against UTEP. The problem was we can't shoot or defend.

So you didn't expect Huggins to be able to find the floor in his third year in the program, on a team virtually devoid of interior players? Are you kidding me?
