That we are still debating Whitford’s recruiting 7 years in is a pretty giant problem.

Stats are fine but you have to look at things somewhat in context.
Sean Sellers was a MAC Freshman of the Year. Had a pretty nice career, especially as a 3-point specialist, but I don't recall him even getting a sniff on any other All-MAC teams after his freshman year, or is my memory flawed (as it often is).
So why was Sellers freshman of the year? Because he was a pretty damn decent player who got a lot of PT on a gawd-awful team.
Coleman's been pretty good this year, but let's not lose track of the fact that he is a red-shirt (so he's had some time to develop) and that, because of Whitford's difficulty in recruiting PGs, his competition for the starting job was a walk-on.
Teague also has had a good year, but realize that he is the ONLY option for interior scoring and rebounding. Since Whitford hasn't recruited a competent big man since Teague, it's not like Taj has to share rebounding or interior scoring with Moses or someone of his ilk. If we want to do anything inside, Teague is our only option.
Coleman and Teague are having nice seasons but there is more to stats than just the sheer numbers. Luckily for both of them, however, most voters for yearly awards probably won't look beyond those numbers.

The harsh reality is, a team is going to typically score 60-70 points per game, so somebody has to score. Our team is just a notch above mediocre in a very bad league.

Ryan Webber came to BSU after Sellers freshman year and took away minutes from him. Sellers almost transferred because of lack of PT.

Coleman was pretty bad last night. Josh Thompson ended up taking a lot of Coleman’s minutes. Coleman was out of control and put the offense in some bad spots. Got taken off the dribble on D. In other words the same concerns we’ve had all season. He ended up with a seat next to Whitford for a bit.

Justin Turner will be the POY this year. Teague still has a shot at first team if the coaches vote. Do they? Same with Coleman for FOY.

Turner is in a different class than the rest of the MAC. Plus, Teague hasn't quite been himself the last handful of games, and we seem to be running our offense through Coleman and Ish now instead of Taj.

My point is simple...Coleman turns out to be what most would consider a very good MAC recruit. And, Bum looks to be pretty good too....just saying maybe the recruiting this last year or two has been a bit better than credited? Fair is fair, right? Talking strictly recruiting not coaching. They are not good enough at this point to lead this team to a MAC championship. I don't have a crystal ball about what they will do over 4 years. Coach seems positive about the rest of this group of newcomers who we have not seen as much, but that remains to be seen.
Demanding they win a championship or they are horseshit, demanding they be huge difference makers or else they are horrible verges on silly any way you cut it. No one class or no two players will win a championship, no single player in our history including Bonzi or T or anybody else really guaranteed that. So I see no reason to be quite as negative about them.
If every freshman we sign can hold their own as starters in the MAC we would in fact be champions. We obviously have not done that, not this year even it is a good class. To say that because these two recruits can not win a championship by themselves we should assume recruiting them was not pretty good recruiting is refusing to give the staff some credit for doing well in this case. Ease up!
We all want to see some big kids prove themselves. While Teague is not an ideal center he has finally shown he is a very solid MAC level player, and he is effective inside, give him a little credit even if he isn't exactly what we want. Let's not confuse that issue and as a result harshly criticizing Coleman and Bumbalough.

Yes, he made a couple of really good plays but way too many unforced errors trying to do too much.

As Coleman matures I expect he’ll settle down and start making the right play instead of trying to make the flashy play. At least I hope so.

If the new transfer rules go through look for MAC level schools to get raided of that best young talent. Whit has had two freshman of the year winners. And then what happened? Yes. Mid-majors become the power 5 “Jucos” for recruits that developed after they missed them the first time around.

That’s a position that we have not seen much of in past years. Hoping that Hazen, Thomas, Acree, and Thompson give the staters enough rest to be as fresh as possible for the MAC Tournment.

As Coleman matures I expect he’ll settle down and start making the right play instead of trying to make the flashy play. At least I hope so. If he actually makes the flashy play more often, I'll live with that. Plays like the back door dunk against EMU and the no look passes, fighting for a loose ball and coming out on the run the other way for a basket, they are flashy moves. If his team mates were the ones blowing the play by not looking for the pass or finding him on a cut, I'd back him 100%. Unfortunately, when he looks really bad, dribbles out of bounds or otherwise loses the handle going one on one, we can't tell whether he could be just a millimeter from making a big play, or just out of control showboat.
I'll give him a little leash, but if he can't make that play a little more often it is showboat and needs to be reined in.
Hey, I like watching Ish rack up double figure scoring and give us better defense than I ever expected, he is so quiet on the floor, almost invisible as he racks up good games without much flash at all. Taj makes some really great plays. But right now when he is on his game Coleman is the player I watch because he has a little flash and a cocky demeanor, a bit like the departed wolf man jawing with the opponent.
I expected him more to be solid and to provide glue, do a little of everything, whatever we needed, and to be better than most thought, a good role player with many roles.
Right now with his glaring miscues he is potentially more and better than that. A lot more of the good flash than I ever expected. A year from now maybe a star?
