the frontline will be an issue but I think we will be pretty athletic. Look for us to take the West. Replacing House and Calhoun is an issue. But I predict Tyler will be an all, star and picking up Persons will be big. We won't have the frontline that Sherman says we need. Hard to argue with that point if you plan to take the league.

I think a lot of people on here forget about persons. Was an Indiana all star his senior year of high school and was the A-Sun freshman of the year. And the kid has been noted saying he likes the school and loves where the program is heading. Hes got a fire to him and he's going to work his ass off, he already is. Not putting all of my chips in on him yet but got a good feeling he could solve a lot of our problems next year.

Haven't forgotten about him. I expect him to be pretty solid in the MAC. Not a great shooter but physical and aggressive. Not at all afraid to drive to the rim.

I'm still giving this team a realistic shot this year to win the West...we're only a game back

Some good analysis above.
We need one decent big guy in this recruiting class, and without that, we might be very skilled, and probably still be good enough to get close, but we will not beat the best teams in the MAC too many times. Those teams feature battle hardened upperclassmen up front who may not be all that skilled but have learned to use their bulk and strength. We'll beat them sometimes, but we would be physically beaten too many times.
I don't think we need quite as much as some think. Nice but not necessary to get somebody in the mold of the best big uglies we have had in the past. We can win without being quite as big and strong as Akron, or the other bigger MAC teams.
I am willing to assume we get better at the positions where we have returning players, but we need depth, and some strength to replace those two seniors we are losing.
The team I see winning for us will have skill and good shooting at all positions, enough size and depth to play hard every possession. Not an inside oriented team, but we need some size.

Not saying everything is peaches and cream but the last three losses are to the two best programs in the MAC and a road loss to a team not inferior to Ball State.
If they come out 1-2 over the week and half, then I'll start getting antsy.
Also, maybe it's in the defensive game plan to help but it seems like we have to fight for an open 3 but our guys get lost and allow them, especially Kiapway.

For too many years there was no optimism, just gloom and doom. We can collectively see the progress Coach Whit has made.

Also, maybe it's in the defensive game plan to help but it seems like we have to fight for an open 3 but our guys get lost and allow them, especially Kiapway. They are not lost, the defense is overplaying our outside shooters, and that will work. We have to have Plan B not force 3's. This is the time of years fans have to have as much internal fortitude as the team. We are in the hardest part of our schedule. One more road game to end the string starting with Kent where we faced 6 games where we were underdogs in 5 of 6. The last 3 games, I expected 3 losses. We got a win and have a chance at BG where we are narrow underdogs to come out 3-3 in those 6 games. We are ahead of where I expected. In the stretch run we have 5 games where we are favorites @home, 3 very tough road games, two more on the road where we have about even money chances. It's a good season if we play up to form. Worst case we exceed the gloomy preseason expectations. We can play better defense, but I think we need to play Davis and Smith more to do that, playing our guards 32 minutes means they don't have legs in the closing minutes. On offense, having Sellers and Tyler finding their play of last year is good news, seeing Moses get more confident and assertive is good. But, other teams have figured out they can defend us with pressure on the perimeter, and we need to find a response. If a new wrinkle will get us open 3's fine, but very likely we have to drive to the basket more, pass inside more, use our screens to get shots inside and get good 2 point FGA's instead of low percentage 3's. Better execution of what we do on both ends is part of it, but we need players to improve at the end of the season, Weber to play on both ends of the court, not get frustrated when they stop him shooting and find a plan B where he an Kiapway drive or find new options out of the offense when they overplay our outside game.

Good analysis 00hmh. I agree with most off what you said. Comparing Weber to Sellers I believe Weber may be a more pure shooter but Sellers may be more a scorer. Sellers can get to the basket. Sellers gets more loose balls, seems to be a better defender, hustles more, takes the charge, etc

Actually we need a point guard, an athletic wing who can shoot, and a big man in this class. Whitford has appx 8 weeks to pull a rabbit here or it becomes a serious issue, regardless of your decade long just wait until next year forecasts. As-a-aside pulling a quality big as a transfer or JUCO is typically harder than recruiting out of high school.

Sellers does step in and take a charge, understands that. He would have played more up to now if he was more aware on the defensive end and a little better defender. Both Weber and he are very similar in that respect, with Weber the more dangerous shooter because he has quicker release.
Weber plays faster on offense, has more motor getting through screens and getting open, and is more ready to take a shot when he catches the ball. Sellers is smooth and doesn't hurry his shot, but then that means he is hurt when he hesitates, and he needs a little more room. He did take the ball to the basket in the Bradley game on a couple of occasions, which I'd like to see both be able to do that.
If either one, or Kiapway, was really a good threat to drive or shoot the pull up jumper, we would surely run more isolation offense. Something they can improve, and for now the offense needs to keep using the threat of their outside shooting. When the guy that sets the screen can't become a threat and his man can jump out and stop the shot, somebody has to be able to take better advantage of that.
