OK....it's a down time for most Ball State sports.
Most of you know that following Cardinal sports is difficult and frustrating (save for the Nate football year and the Majerus/Hunsaker Bball years).
If Ball State was to concentrate on a SINGLE sport (mens or womens) to be regionally dominant. What would that be? Considering location, facilities, coaching, talent pool, fiscal support, fan support.........etc. etc. etc.
I've been a "minor sport" supporter for years. I'd say, if we put our mind to it, we could be super competitive in baseball within the MAC and within the state of Indiana. Our facilities (even with the upgrades) would be lacking a little to attract top-tier talent, but we have the coaching and the lackluster conference to dominate. I doubt if there is enough fan support, but that might come with success.

I would want it to be football but it would more realistic to think it could happen in Basketball

Good question for July...
We can be very very good in more than one sport. But,our advantages are not so great over anybody else in conference, I am not sure your premise works. After all to dominate we have to be in a conference to have a schedule and play, so I can't get by the if part of the question, anyway. We just can't concentrate on one sport.
In a conference, we have to field team in all sports, and probably have to maintain some level of competitiveness if we want the conference affiliation. Besides, we owe it to all the athletes involved to try to provide good facilities and coaching.

I think if you really gave it an effort Baseball might be something BSU could make a priority. The good news would be that it's hard in the Midwest for anybody to stand out. The bad news is that indoor training and Spring travel is necessary and a little expensive. The question raised is, like most, how do you pay for it, and that either means new money or cutting other sports. If we did not have football...most of these questions are a lot easier. But we do, and have to have it for the MAC. So, there is a real dilemma. Even if we could agree on the very controversial proposition to cut way back or eliminate cost elsewhere, where do we go to build schedules and maintain our standing. Bradley is basketball without football and it really helps them in basketball and other sports. Well, except they don't have football. And that is maybe in a community big enough that they might have a chance to support it...

There is NOTHING that will bring a crowd to their feet quicker than picking up a seven-nine split when your team is down a few pins.

The women's basketball program since 2001-02 minus the end of the Packard era has been respectable.

Dominant not a word we often use about BSU sports these days, but we have had some good teams in women's sports over time.
Right now last few years WBB is better than respectable.
Men's golf pretty good.
We're probably too tough on our athletes generally, fans, but a tough crowd to please.
