What a hallowed tradition!
Good riddance?
But, I think people are going to trip over that stump they left on this pedestrian mall thing.

Ok I was around during the late 90's early 00's and I do not remember ever seeing it I have been around all that time, too, but after all chewing gum while walking around campus is a challenge for many at BSU, including faculty, staff and students.

I hate when something stupid happens at Ball State.. It screws up my "Ball State" key word searches for at least a week. I have no time to search through 10,000 gum tree posts to find a random tidbit about recruiting so I will resume my searching next week

This tree story is a double keyword whammy when searching for news about Whitford's frontline recruiting. Because the two most common word sequences in those stories are "recruited by Ball State" and "can't walk and chew gum at the same time."

Well played Sherm very well played

"IndyStar reported that university spokesperson Joan Todd said the tree was removed to make way for a new "walking mall," which according to the campus master plan, will be used as a new pedestrian and bicycle path between the east side of campus and the Jo Ann Gora Student Recreation and Wellness Center."
When did this "walking mall" turn into a vehicle through-way? They ripped up the tree to lay new blacktop and make it a street. There's very little sidewalk and no bike lanes. That doesn't seem very walking-friendly.

It's not for walking. It's for trucks. The drive down to the garage is closed and will become a green area. Long term the Emens garage is going away. It'll all be a walking mall someday.

Short term they need access to dorm for delivery with construction closing current access, and long term plans are to inconvenience all the people now using the Emens garage...

That doesn't seem very walking-friendly. It's temporarily a vehicle though-way. This is a multi-year project, and for phase one, they need the vehicular access to Woodward.

Yep, I park in the Emens garage. But, why be able park remotely close to where you work, right? Long term looks bad, and short term will probably be no picnic with traffic disrupted. Emens is an important parking structure. As it is now, it is used by people from a good distance away already, including some who work on the old quad, TC, AJ, Whitinger. Guests coming in to campus frequently park there. I have no idea where they think employees are going to park. Northwest of Arena? Parking will be worse than an urban campus.

They don't think it appropriate to have parking at the center of campus. Why the hell not??? There are quite of few of us who'll be displaced, which means the other lots will somehow have to accomodate all the extra traffic. All in the name of being "green" and having a walking/biking mall. It almost feels like employees are not important. (Can't tell you how many people have said, "you have to pay for parking where you work?"
