I think at some point, the MAC will either drop it or not make it mandatory. That might be 50 years from now, who knows?
The other alternatives aren't very exciting. The Summit? Blah. The Horizon? Meh. I don't concern myself with the academics side of things (endowments and all that crap) but I don't know what BSU has that is desirable to other conferences ahead of any other schools in the MAC who have enjoyed some success. It's not 1990.
So, we get to live with the ESPN contract for however long that is and then best case scenario is (drumroll).....back to all Saturday football.

I love (heart emoji) being 10 minutes away from D-1 football, but I have resigned myself to the fact that Ball State football will never be very popular and wonder about it's future. Sadly, that is the reality. At some point the money just isn't going to be there or is just unsustainable. Then what? The bad news is that it is already not sustainable at anything like its current state for half of the FBS teams. The good news is that it is already not sustainable at anything like its current state for half of the FBS teams. That may mean we see something done sooner rather than later, I don't see how the President's of the mid majors can just drop football, but they can't avoid doing something, they are bleeding money.

I hope for BSU that at least one game is played in the fog like Toledo last year so the empty seats are invisible. I suspect the end of ESPN paying the MAC for weeknight football will come at the time the current contract expires as I see the D1 splitting with the P5 being in a separate class very soon.

And maybe P5 splitting into their own "union" would be good for the rest of us. Perhaps it'll end the futile arms race non bcs schools have engaged in. And I wouldn't mind if the schools on our level instituted a playoff system like FCS and lower division schools. A BSU could actually have a shot at playing for a national championship in a playoff system rather than go to and lose a meaningless bowl game.
