BSU Women's volleyball opens their season tomorrow at home against Albany. They will then face Belmont and New Mexico as part of the Active Ankle Tournament.
The MAC preseason poll released today has the Cardinals finishing 3rd in the West Division and two players (Jenna Spadafora and Kelly Hopkins) made the preseason All-MAC list.

Great win for the Cards. New Mexico was a solid team, and it looked bleak for the Cards after the first two sets.
Good broadcast by Ball State on ESPN3.

I'm really surprised at the WVB record this year. I thought this far into Steve's tenure that his recruits would rule the MAC. BSU is ranked 172nd in the country right now, behind some real lightweight schools. The last four games have been good, but the road record isn't impressive.

I've been saying this the last couple years. It feels like Shondell's best seasons were his first two and the program has plateaued since then. I'm not saying I want him replaced, but maybe we overrated a coach whose claim to fame was beating a bunch of 2A high school teams every year before he got here.

I can't speak to previous seasons, but he has dealt with a lot of injuries to his big hitters this season, with multiple girls missing more than a couple games, forcing Shondell to rely on younger and less experienced girls.

I've attended every home match this year and have watched the away ones online when possible. I can attest to dmbdan41's analysis. Lots of upperclassman injuries early in the season. Yet. having watched this team so far I've noticed that the freshman are surprisingly good. I remember reading somewhere that this freshman class was ranked in the top 50 in the country and it truly shows.
It might be even rougher next season with so many good seniors (especially the setter) leaving, but Shondell has done an excellent job recruiting.

Hopefully another season of experience and those freshmen turned sophomores will be ready for an increased roll, but I suspect it will be a tough season next year. Everyone is healthy now though so here's hoping we can make some noise in the tournament this year.

maybe we overrated a coach whose claim to fame was beating a bunch of 2A high school teams every year before he got here. That is a truly ridiculous characterization of his record, and credentials. Those "2A" teams at Burris won open state championships before the class system, beating literally everyone in the state, and beat some of the best teams in the country, year after year. He developed many players at Burris, and through Munciana both for his Burris teams and other HS teams, produced numerous high D1 recruits and national team members. He, his family, the coaches he has worked with and trained have made Delaware County one of the best places in the country for a girl who wants to play high level volleyball to develop. Steve had college coaching offers for years at schools higher in the WVB hierarchy. We are lucky he has the family ties and desire to stay in Muncie.

That's all true and fantastic, but he still needs to win at Ball State.
