Good news is we will compete against the MAC. The bad news is we are still a LONG way away from competing on a National stage. We have never competed on a national stage. Our two most notable seasons was our sweet sixteen year by beating Oregon and Louisville in the first and second round of the NCAA tourney. And then giving National Champion Las Vegas their best challenge of the year. Next would be the Maui team who faded in the early schedule and could not get to the NCAA. Even though we were ranked in the top fifteen at one time. Those were the two teams who gave us the most positive press across the nation. I always considered having those teams a once in a lifetime event. And I was lucky to see it twice. I hope to see multiple MAC championships. Many 20+ win seasons and pulling some “upsets” against power five conference teams every few years. But to be competitive on a National Stage, nice dream. At this point expecting any MAC school to compete on a national stage is a stretch. I just want BSU someday to be at a point where a 11-7 type of MAC campaign is average/normal rather than a high water mark and in a peak yr BSU gets at the very least to the NIT but ideally NCAAs. Program hasn't been there since end of 01-02 campaign.

Many 20+ win seasons and pulling some “upsets” against power five conference teams every few years. But to be competitive on a National Stage, nice dream. We defiantly competed against the better programs in the 80’s and early 90’s. We were a top 60 program for about a 6 year period. 88 teams had wins against Purdue, Minnesota, Northwestern, Pittsburgh and lost to the most talented team in the country that year, Illinois who had 6 guys play in the NBA, by 12 points. Game was closer than that. 89 team had wins over Pregon State, Louisville, close loses to Purdue and top 10 team Memphis. 90 team ranked Xavier, lost to Mississippi St on the road and went to NIT. 91 team beat Mississippi St, lost at Purdue by 6, went to NIT. 92 team went to NCAA tournament. My point is those teams would compete on a National level, never worried about getting embarrassed and always had chances to beat those teams on a given night. We are no where near that now and this program could get there with the right guy and the support from the administration. We have set our sights to low. Majarus and Hunsaker understood that you can compete against the better programs by finding guys who would compete like hell and would challenge everybody they played. Toughness and finding junk yard dogs will take you a long way. Those coaches understood that. Whitford does not. You are not going to run and gun and win against superior athletic teams. Ain’t going to happen on a consistent basis. Toughness never have off days, shooters do!

Signature Wins by Coach (Butler and Valpo not included)
Majerus = Purdue, Wisconsin, Northwestern, Pitt Hunsaker = Oregon St., Louisville, Washington, Xavier, Mississippi St. McCallum = Auburn, Mississippi, Wisconsin, Michigan, Purdue Buckley = Texas Tech, UCLA, Kansas, LSU, Nebraska, Xavier Thompson = Six figure shadow settlement Taylor = DePaul Whitford = St. Louis? Valpo? ?
Being Nationally relevant happened only twice but being at least competitive against power conference schools was at least possible until the incompetence of Gora’s meddling in athletics. Her legacy of campus infrastructure improvements, brand exposure and Letterman schwoozing is undeniable but so is the demise of our two major men’s programs.

Yeah at this point Jimmy Whitford really doesn't have a single signature win. St. Louis was terrible last year and Valpo was only so-so in 15-16. As far as Gora goes, several of the campus projects were already in the planning stages when she arrived and her disastrous geothermal boondoggle more than negates any positive she fumbled her way into. The combination, of Gora and Hollis Hughes, was probably the least effective college leadership in the country.

The demise of the men's programs started under the WAD, Andi Seger. Gora, Budd just finished it off.

It's all skittles and rainbows when they shoot well, but when they don't (29.7% from 3), it is uggggg-ly. Hashtag small ball

Don't forget the "supportive" section of the fan base, whose compliance and submission was necessary in this process, and whose work continues to this day.

If we play like we did last night we are going to get beat by the majority of teams in D1 and spanked by the good ones. We live by the 3 and die by it, and when we are not hitting we let it frustrate us and have an impact on all aspects of play. It's fools gold to base your offense on the lowest percentage shot in the game.
Last night we had trouble even hitting bunnies.

Glad I didn't watch last night. Avoided it until this morning.

Missing Tyler always hurts the effort we can put forth. A constant problem that slows our ability to meld as a unit. The Hollywood situation and early injuries are also an issue at this point.
They still should have defended better. I look for this team to get much better than shown last night as these issues get into the rear view mirror. I certainly hope I’m right.

Might want to get used to that. Doesn't look like his issues are going away. Whit, or Sandy thru Whit, needs to make a stand. Issuing an ultimatum now is too late.

Oh please...............Tyler if anything has been a four year cancer, he probably gives the least effort of anyone on this team. Seriously what are you talking about ?

College basketball games are won with weak side help defense, blocking out to achieve effective rebounding, shot selection, not to mention good ball handling ( why do you think coach Gene Hackmon insisted in passing the ball multiple times before shooting, it tires defenses out ). It helps if you can get the ball inside for easy lay ups and foul trouble but you have to have a big guy and we do not. Leaving the big guy out of the equation, what part does Whit do with his Indiana All Stars? Jackin' up threes and playing a run and gun strategy is not gonna get it done. Why did any of you expect something different from this staff? Same ol' same ol'. We will beat some mediocre MAC teams and end up in some alphabet soup tournament of losers. Is this something to get enthused about or for that matter is it something to get upset over? I think not. Seems like the mens football and basketball programs will be in a funk for the forseeable future.
