Would explain a lot. Don’t defend the 3 you get down big in a hurry.

We can not afford to come out flat and uninspired again or we’ll lose again. A big question is Persons’ ankle. Any word on what kind of shape he’s in??

Why don't we ditch the pack line and just play zone ? Obviously the pack line is something we don't do very well. The pack line defense must be a Miller thing. I hear Indy media talking about Archie using this at IU too. I'm personally not a fan of it but I deem we use it because we're not very good at defending on the ball against quick guards and it covers more deficiencies than a traditional zone. Kind of a hybrid between a man-to-man and a zone, I guess?

We don't have the 1 through 3 to make that happen. Too much room, too easy to pass, too easy to find an open man, too easy to nail a wide open three. It's square pegs in round holes, just like our small ball offense.

It is a lazy man defensive approach. It works if you have shot blockers roaming the paint but we don't and we do not have enough depth up front when we get into foul trouble. We are terrible getting out on shooters as we are rarely in control on closeouts. Simply put, we are not a good defensive team.

Yep you need a rim protector, quick 1-3, and it's helps a lot if you have a shut down defender at 1. We don't have any of that.

Whit spoke of getting a rim protector early on, but then never did....

After a brief hiatus, I will be making the pilgrimage to Muncie tonight. Both teams are undefeated when I attend. Maybe I'm what they need.

We are terrible getting out on shooters as we are rarely in control on closeouts. Simply put, we are not a good defensive team. They seem to be addressing the recruiting issues with lack of perimeter defense, and I think the lack of a strong interior defender to protect the rim is an issue whether you play pack line or not. Probably worse for us? But, not easy for anyone to solve. Despite all of us understanding how the issue hurts us, there are perhaps 4 teams in the conference who could say they have that covered. The depth issue has always seemed to me the critical one, we have always needed one more functional big man available, never a strong defensive team as a result. Just have to outscore people... Of course, most MAC teams, even most mid major teams just do not have a really bullet proof defensive presence in the middle. If you grab the brass ring recruiting, you still normally do not have depth. All mitigate their problems differently. Zone, for example. Looks like our theory is to help on the post, and unfortunately without VERY good athletes on the perimeter to help and recover we are toasted outside. Better next year on defense, but our defenders who are better on the perimeter will be perhaps not as good on offense...oh dear...
