Despite the fake punt fiasco, last night was by far the best coaching job against the Pats by Pagano.
In the previous games, Belichick so thoroughly out-schemed Pagano and staff that basically everything the Pats did worked and nothing the Colts did worked. I also loved that he went for 4th downs and onside kicked. To me, that is taking initiative instead of waiting around for Belichick to give him another wedgie.
I'm not really a Pagano supporter. I think he is a nice and admirable guy of average intelligence and no imagination. His mind-numbing repetition of the most over-used football cliches any time he's intereviewed is not important in itself, but tends to illustrate his shortcomings. Colts could do a lot better. Could do worse too, I suppose.
But my #1 objection to him has been his total inabillity to game plan against Belichick, and that got a lot better last night.
I haven't heard yet who really f-ed up that fake punt. Sounds like more than one player, since both the formation and execution were wrong. Pagano has to take responsibillity for the poor preparation that allowed those players to f up that bad. And he has been.

Pep Hamilton getting away from what was working also created big issues last night. Everyone knows the colts oline can't/shouldn't block past two seconds. Quick passes and runs were doing fine. Why stop!?
And Andre Johnson is now old, slow, and unathletic. Freaking start using your first round draft pick instead--or are you admitting you blew the pick?

I see alot of people are saying the whole concept of that fake is stupid. I don't agree with that. The concept makes some sense. Evidently the colts hoped that either 1) the pats would leave so few players near the ball that Anderson could run 3 yards or 2) the pats would try to quickly sub, and the colts, paying close attention to the comings and goings from the pats' sideline, would snap and get the first down through a too-many-players penalty. None of that is any more silly than any other trick play. Trick plays always rely on confusion or misguided reactions from the other team.
One thing I'm really curious about is why Whalen was snapping. That only makes sense in terms of him being a potential reciever. But since, apparently, the Colts never had any intention of passing, were they just trying to further confuse the pats by making them think it might be a pass? Is it even possible for Whalen to be eligable in that position? Or maybe they figured the pats wouldn't know that either, so the confusion ploy would still work?
Or maybe they figured he is a smart Stanford guy and they wanted someone who could think on their feet in that unusual situation. If so, then that idea apparently backfired in a huge way. I heard that Anderson was screaming not to snap it, and therefore Whalen is the main player f-up in the whole mess.
Anyway, the execution and preparation were completely disasterous, but the concept was plausible. Has anyone seen a similar play that worked at any level?
I don't imagine we will ever know what all the thinking was begind the whole thing because nobody is going to want to talk about it. Nor will we hear who's original idea it was. I'm betting not Pagano.
I actually feel a little better about the Colts today. I figured they would lose by 20 or more. Last night they looked like a team that could play on a more or less even basis with the best in the league. They had not previously shown that this year. Also it was a huge relief to see Luck playing and looking healthy and not throwing interceptions. And it's still looking like 8-8 wins the AFC South.

As I bask in the euphoric victory over Green Bay......I thought sure I'd see security escort Chuck to the exit after that half-ending punt play.
Let him keep the new camo hoody to keep fans from throwing beer on him as he goes down the tunnel.

Ok, a little off topic. But, concerning the Talib penalty........
I don't think, in my entire adult life, have I ever become angry and the first thought to pop into my head was to go poke someone in the eye.

Probably so, but the drug-addled dipshit owner Irsay is the root of all stupid for the Colts.
Should just play Clipboard Jesus Whitehurst from here on out and move up in the draft.
