"On the other hand a lot of the teams any of those guys played on probably had less overall talent than this team will have."
You are completely off your rocker.

"On the other hand a lot of the teams any of those guys played on probably had less overall talent than this team will have." You are completely off your rocker. Go back and look at the rosters. And the records. The greats we are talking about did not win championships every year. And some years the team they were on were good but did not really come close. Bonzi was on a team that was about 500. Palombizio and T Smith played on some teams that were not much above .500. Add a Bonzi, Dan or T Smith to this team and we would this year have better records than some of those teams they played on.

Oh, I don't doubt that we've piled up enough wing/guard talent to not lose another 17 in a row. But contend for a championship? No. For that Whitford still needs to recruit frontline talent comparable to the list in my previous post, to balance out the roster. Until he does, we'll have to comfort ourselves with a lot of clever talk about elbow jumpers, motion offense, "recruiting to our system", etc.

We'll contend without much more than we have. I'd love more size too. I would expect us for example to recruit a big guy to replace Wells. Expect we see more than you think out of our current bigs too. But. Expect to see us continue to play more motion offense than post up offense. And we will be fine if we continue to get good 6-6 to 6-8 athletes and wing players. I think you underestimate this brand of basketball.

This team with Wells, Teague, and Moses has more size up front than BSU's had in quite a few years. In fact, who can name the last Ball State team with more size??? Plus I believe all three mentioned will see significant action. As 00hmh suggests this team with several good 6'6-6'7 wings will be good in the MAC...I mean wasn't Theron about 6"8...and Payne about 6"8...and Sylvester 6'6 or so...Bonzi...6'6....Chandler...6'5...seems like a lot of our former best #3 & #4's were 6'5 to 6'8? ? I believe even our very best Centers have been 6'9 to 6'10...I mean Lonnie Jones about 6'10....Curtis Kidd....6'9-6'10....Jarrod Jones...6'9

I still have hopes for Teague. Although some things I hear suggest he is a type of player we already have plenty of, rather than the type we really need.

Chandler Thompson was about 6-3 but played like 6-9 with springs. Stronger than most players on the court at any time. A little like Andre Emmit at Texas Tech, he had to score inside, because he couldn't hit outside to save his life.
If that kid could have hit a 15 foot jumper he'd have been an all time great. After some kids graduated, he played on some teams where nobody, or only one player, could hit a jumper and the opposition would sag back and make Thompson play 1 on 4.
He did pretty well with that, but if he just had another shooter, we'd have been better, and if they had to guard him out a little further...

But, on the contrary I think it will be just fine that he is more a wing than an inside player. What he will do is score going to the basket, he'll beat up people on the drive and on cuts to the basket. He'll hit mid range if they back off him. And to make all that work even better, we will need a center to shoot outside. Not clog up the area around the basket. What is good about 6-8 here is his wingspan and ability to defend maybe 4 positions on the court, and help on defense. He'll block shots, make steals and run the court. Much better than the aircraft carrier big guy you would maybe prefer. As long as we have a center who can shoot a little and defend the other teams big inside player we will be fine. This year I want him to play D, rebound and not worry too much about scoring. We have scoring, we need athletic defenders so we can get a little pressure, play fast and run the ball against the bigger teams.

Lonnie had no offense, though. Kidd and McCurdy were muscular and strong. T Smith, when he was healthy, was maybe the best all around bigger player except maybe Palombizio, inside and out. But both he and Dan were probably closer to 6-7 than 6-9. Jones at 6-9 coulda, woulda shoulda been on the list, but didn't have the heart some of our best centers had. We need a center with some strength, our best centers were about the size of Moses. I recall Payne, Gillis were good athletes and strong, but not huge. Maybe not a lot bigger than House. And they, a little like House, were not really all around good offensive players, good inside though. We forced the ball into them with some success. On this team they would be great on defense and the boards, and probably not have to score inside as much. I think our memories make some of the great players Sherman mentions bigger than they were, not really as great a players as a freshman as we remember and they worked hard for success, more than that they were physically dominant. I have not seen that heart in a BSU inside player for a long time. I hope we find it in one or more of the guys we have. Edit: Kam had heart, his body just wouldn't hold up. He was tenacious and aggressive, and is another guy I wish could have shot the ball. I like that Whitford wants kids who can shoot. On that count this could become one of the better BSU teams we have had.

We need Shafer Suggs ........... I saw him in practice one time (he had his arm in a cast from a football injury and not doing regular scrimmage with the team) stand under the basket with leg weights and the cast, and dunk it. I can't remember, but I thought him to be around 6'3"

Lonnie Jones was listed at 7'0", Steve Payne 6'7" (now one of Ray's assistants at Detroit).

The opposing center would smirk just before the ball went up for the opening tip . . . and Shaf would out jump them every time!

Shafer could get off the floor very quickly and also jump out of the gym. I saw him pick a quarter off the top of the backboard in Irving Gym before a practice (not to be out done by David Thompson at NC who made SI for doing such at 6'4"). Shafer and Buckner at IU were the only two athletes in major college sports to start in both FB and BB. Shafer was only 6'2" and the best all around athlete I have ever personally known through the years at Ball State. One heck of a safety for the Jets.

I am switching over to agree with Sherman on this one. We need more size. I like small ball, but want a center who is at least 6-6...

With Wells at 7'1....Moses at 6'9....and Teague at 6'8....this team has plenty of height for the MAC...and as OOhmh has stated we have a lot of very good wings in the 6'5 to 6'7 range.
I will still accept all comers that we win 15 or more....ALL IN...ALL THE TIME!!
