You both could be right but I believe Davis will still get the nod at PG although I think Smith will certainly contribute and could be the better distributor given our scoring options.

Neither Davis nor Tyler showed enough to displace Turner as point guard, and Turner was a square peg being crammed desperately into that particular round hole.
I think Smith will get his chance to show he is a better option.

I would think Smith would start. He's not a freshman just coming in. They liked him as a starting point. Might as well start him Friday.

I agree principally with The General re: PG position, however, I believe Davis came off of an injury so I'm not certain he ever got to showcase his self 100% last season...he also may be our best defender at the PG position...he contributed as a Soph on a Sweet 16 team so I think there is more in the cupboard than some may think!

Back on topic: PG: N. Smith SG: J. Tyler SF: S. Sellers PF: F. House C: N. Wells If I remember correctly, Franko does better coming off the bench. I expect to see Bo in the starting spot and Franko coming off the bench. I also have my doubts that Sellers will start in front of Weber. EDITED: Never mind. I rechecked and I have the Bo/Franko thing backward.

Neither Davis nor Tyler showed enough to displace Turner as point guard, and Turner was a square peg being crammed desperately into that particular round hole. I think Smith will get his chance to show he is a better option. I think that is not quite true. Turner was not a point guard, but had to play there mostly because he couldn't defend a big guard. Tyler was a SG it is true, and did not play PG in any form except maybe attacking the press where he could get the ball up. Davis was not at full speed at first, forcing more minutes for Turner, I think. Then Tyler was gone and we didn't have many guards at all. Davis was actually the best PG in most ways, but he had to match up and defend the best scorer on the other team, so that left Turner who in theory was quick enough to defend the opposing PG, if somewhat unwilling or unable to defend anybody at all. He could bring the ball up against the press, so he was sort of a point guard, but he was really a midget shooting guard. But he was there out of default. Everyone kept hoping Turner would get his shot back. He did. In one game. But generally he was a SG who could not shoot and a combo guard who could not guard anyone. That left Davis as an overworked defender, injured and hobbled most of the year, who was not a good shooter. So the sad truth was that mostly we had no point guard on defense and no shooting at guard for 1/2 the year. Kiapway did provide some offense and shooting but was a bit ragged as a freshman forced to be the one and only scholarship reserve. Well I think Rocco played guard one game... Oh, don't make me remember this disaster at guard, anymore. This year we have a good offensive guard in Tyler, two good defenders and ball handlers in Davis and Smith, and Kiapway, more mature and skilled as a reserve shooting guard who should not have to play as primary ball handler. Moreover, in practice we have an aggressive active big guard in Persons who provides a lot of intensity. All in all much better than looking down the bench or at practice at walk on players who you have to depend on in extremis.

Davis is not a point guard. We don't need to be playing guys out of position this year like we have in the past.

In our offense we don't suffer very much with a good combo guard who won't turn it over. Smith will be better in some ways. Davis fits well because he defends well and is steady with the ball. We are much better than having Turner with the ball. I'll be surprised if we don't use both.
