I agree with most here that a 7 win season would bring smiles but also not be enough in the eyes of the greedy. I warn the collective you that it is hard to turn a program around but we are on the verge of doing it. Better to do it slow and sure rather than to transfer a bunch in, win 8, and see the head coach and staff walk, only to start over again. I truly hope that the new recruits will plug some holes and we turn this thing we call Ball State football into a respectable year in and year out program.

I know people look at last year and say we could have won 7 games. But you can also look at last year and say we very easily could have won only 3.
We got 2 really big wild cards in our new coordinators. They could elevate our play or we could take a step back.
I'm hoping for 6. More will be icing on the cake. Less wouldn't shock me.

Exactly we were just as close to a disaster as we were to breaking out

The idea of addition by subtraction when you get rid of a coach seems to fill some with great excitement. How can it be worse is the retort when they confront any concern about trouble with transition or change.
When something isn't working as well you want, changing something can change that. Can also change it for the worse...
What we seem to have here is change in coach at the top, but I am not sure we are seeing any real change in philosophy on either side of the ball.
So was the fault of the coaches that they could not teach and develop players? Could not manage the assistants? Was it that they could not make good plans? Could not motivate?
Some of that is possible of course and an improvement in the offing for that reason. I just have not see the case made for it. In fact Joey leaving for a clearly better job seems counter evidence of an inept coach and improvement being likely.
Nobody had much good to say about the DC. What do we know about the nuts and bolts of the problems there and do we really have reason to expect quantum change with the hire there?

Elsons overall body of work was never good he had one good season at WKU and the rest of his seasons were blah to ho hum.. Cardfan and I stated this when he was hired..
Now the other problem lies in personel we simply do not have safeties ready to play d1 football. Cosby is undersized but good after that we have no one. Thats why we moved our best LB to safety. That did not really work Wilborn tried and did well enough but how do you ask a guy to learn a new position in three months
Our other problem is size on the Dline this has plagued us forever. We seem to be getting bigger but our size is really young
lastly players have said they thought some of Elsons schemes and methods were a bit odd

By all accounts Elson is a good man, but he is not a good coach. Further, as you stated, our personnel is seriously lacking on that side of the ball. I think our offense may be a little weaker next year too.

If that happens can we afford the bowl games?? I really don't care about the financials. I'll leave that for other people to worry about. People on here talk a lot about the financial side of things, but does it really affect any of us personally? Let those in charge take care of all that and just enjoy the I agree. I guess those people worried about money for a bowl game should of been thrilled that BSU won the maximum number of games for bowl ineligibility in 2019 at 5.

The goal should be to break .500 in the MAC, and almost by default that would make them bowl eligible.

I think 4-8 to 6-6 is possible. You guys are forgetting that it took a perfect storm to get some of our 5 wins this year. NIU and Toledo were both down, and we caught both of them in the worst part of their season. This will not be the case next year. True, we barely lost to CMU, WMU, and Kent, but we also got a Miami team that did not need to win its last game of the season. There are no guarantees next year, IMO.

With so much to clean up on field, especially on defense and special teams and the cheap route (mandated?) staff replacements I’m not sure we can win 6 next year. (My goodness that’s a low bar for success).
