This is our annual January - early February collapse. We will get on a streak again in mid February and things will look promising before the annual MAC tourney first round collapse..... I am not sure if you guys have noticed this yet, but it has been the same story since 2015 Some of the brighter folks on this message board have. Some others who are still in denial, not so much. There are really only two people who don't understand this: One will never ever publicly admit they are wrong, the other will never change their mind.

We've kind of backed ourselves in a corner with this 4 of 5 on the road stretch. Assuming you can hold court at home Saturday, we'd need to sweep the next two roadies to go .500 for the trip. The massive turnovers against CMU was an outlier for the most part. Our Achilles will continue to be shooting well and relying on freshmen guards. Teague has carried us and El Amin for the most part. We need consistent, poised production from at least one other player, preferably two if we are to truly be relevant in late Feb. and Mar.

This team does not have it. My thinking right now is 17-15. Twenty wins unlikely & they had better win 2 of next 3 or .500 becomes questionable.Defense is better this yr & turnovers last night were much better. If we had hit foul shots like BG we would have won.

We just don’t have that guy off the bench who can provide difference making offense. Bg has a kid come in and put up 25. We don’t really have that 3rd scorer among our starters either. Not on a consistent basis. And when you have a Mallers foul out with zeros across the board you’re not going to win often. Hazen did a decent job in relief but lacks punch. Bumbalough isn’t ready yet but has to be out there. He’s not shot the ball well. Not nearly like I thought he would. We have too many guys who give just bits and pieces but not enough bang for the buck.

Bumbalough not hitting 3s is one thing but his free throw shooting has been much worse than I thought I was thinking he would be 85% & he is at 59.4% just behind Teague whose at 59.5%. Ugh.

Thowin' up threes in a close game with a superior opponent. Has this staff ever heard of shot selection or are they afraid that a freshman might throw a hissy fit if they mention it? Five missed threes at the end. Give me a break. Quite simply this coach and his staff do not AND cannot coach the game of basketball. Set a couple of tough screens and take the high percentage shot and put the pressure on BG to answer . I can't watch this shit anymore. This is just horrible. When will these idiots learn this is not the way to run a college basketball program? Quite frankly it is quite evident they will NEVER learn. Discipline is needed and should be demanded. These are 18-21-year old kids LEARNING THE GAME. Quit cheerleading and coach for christsakes. If I could, I would hire Whit away from BSU and let him run a lay up drill at a grade school somewhere.

Luke's free throw shooting was not that bad these past two games. Y'all should really look at the box score before bitching about his play at the line. He was 3-4 last night and 5-7 at Central Michigan. While he did shoot those freebies poorly earlier in the season, as of late he has been better than the team overall.
He is going to be good.

His percentage on the season is what we’re talking about. He’s not been as good as we expected. Didn’t say he wouldn’t get better, but to this point it hasn’t been good enough. Especially fit a kid who was second in mr basketball voting last year and put up 30 a game. You kinda figure he could shoot a little bit and hit at least 80% from the Ft line.

He has in the past hit high %.
He needs to not play so many minutes at this stage. Freshman, starting and being banged around for 36 minutes all have to be a factor. Will improve.
It's not just the usual pressure on a game winning FT. He's been there many times in HS. I'd probably like him at the line in that case right after Mallers and Ish, before others.

My point is, in a close game work for the high percentage. Whit should be smart enough to make a few 2 point baskets and put the pressure on BG. Do not put the pressure on a Freshman jackin' up threes....it is called coaching he DOES NOT do it. He is a lousy cheerleader at best. I did not expect anything different but i just can't watch these kids play their hearts out then end up losing cause their coach does not have a clue on how to teach them better basketball habits.

What doesn't make sense is we stop going inside to our best player in these late game situations and start cranking threes. Perhaps that is what BG forced us to do at the end with their D. I did not watch but followed online, but the way Whitford has built this team is to shoot a high volume of threes, and sink or swim with it when the opponent takes away the interior pass to Teague. We literally have no other inside option which leaves Mallers, El Amin, Bumb and now Acree to chuck and pray. No KJ is really hurting us (come back please) and the fact we've swung and missed on other frontcourt recruits (Huggins, Thomas). Hazen is a scrapper but not a scorer or a post up threat. This "deepest" team mantra is just not real. We are going to win more games and look good in some of them but unless we get streaky hot down the stretch in Feb. we are destined to be a bridesmaid again most likely.

Reality and I largely agree again....becoming a habit! Teague did not get nearly enough touches late, and shot selection very poor. Free throws and late game play were killers.
We disagree a bit on depth...if KJ was playing I believe the out come in 3 to 4 games could have been different....we agree here too just maybe we don't agree on depth. Its not just about scoring, but defense and rebounding; KJ is our best rebounding guard and arguably the best on ball defender on the team! And, on top of it he has Senior experience which we lack late in games....anyone here doubt that KJ would not be on the floor late?
KJ, where are you....need you back soon!

About last night's game, I don't believe it was all the three pointers taken towards the game's end, but the lack of defense by the Cards on BG's three point shooters that caused a small panic by our guards to try and shoot us back into the game. This happens a lot in college ball. One team makes a three and expands a lead, and the other team comes down and launches a quick three as well. Usually a wasted shot.
Working to get the ball inside would be ideal, but patience is lacking when time is short.
Go Cards!
