German recently named National player of the week.. Stop him we win but really who is going to guard him. He is wat to quick for Coleman or Bumbalough Interesting how when Ish came in he got a lot of flak as a disappointing recruit. Couldn't score, couldn't defend, looked clueless and so on. Of course a lot of that was just not understanding how hard the transition from HS to D1 can be. But.
If there was anything at all in it, then Ish is one of Whitford's best jobs of player development.
Coleman was deemed a wasted scholarship by one forum recruiting guru, so I guess Whit has done a real miracle in his case.
Bumbalough, we all pronounced a defensive liability who would no doubt score reasonably well.
Moral of the story in all cases both how unpredictable freshman recruits are likely to be. But, we ought give staff a little more credit for recruiting judgment and for player development sometimes.

Ish has developed nicely. He's wrapping up his junior year. Will he make any of the All League teams? He may make honorable mention. Whether he does or doesn't, I wouldn't call that a huge coup, would you? He is a senior next year. Bumbalough won't be on the all freshman team, I'd guess. So, he's what average then? Coleman has real potential. Again, he's young and could develop even more but he's not an all-league player either so is that another feather in Whitford's cap? We are 14-10. Some interesting talent and potential at guard and wing. Big men, not so much. Shocking.

We’re basically a .500 to a few games above .500 program under whit. We’re not pulling away from anyone. And we have had teams with poor team dynamics and internal problems that have led to flame outs. Last year being a prime example. Do not give me the injury excuse—we had a difficult locker room last year in a season where we were supposed to make a run.
This years team seems much more cohesive but does it have enough talent to make a run?

I'll never understand why you and Kid feel the need to chest thump so much. I personally thought Ish was a solid recruit. He was horrid defensively his first two years and he was hurt a lot, but he showed some potential. He is still not great defensively, but our opponents in the MAC are terrible offensively, so it works. What has surprised me the most this season (especially MAC games) is at how elite of a level he is shooting the three. I'll confess to being one who questioned recruiting Coleman and especially to counting on him to be a starter. He is much more athletic than I thought, and he definitely shoots it a lot better than I expected (though he is only 32% from three). However, he plays matador D and is a turnover machine. Does he have a chance to grow in those areas, for sure, so we shall see what type of player he ends up being. Bumbalough is exactly who I thought he'd be. He's a very streaky shooter (so he's not anywhere near an elite shooter) and only shooting 32% from three. He does not have the physicality to drive to the basket, shoot off the dribble, or defend superior athletes or bigger guards. But one thing is for sure - the kid is a competitor, he works his ass off, takes care of the ball, and doesn't act like a dumbass to the refs and crowd like some of our players.

My point here is Ish was given the assignment on German and handled it pretty well. Has done that all year on opponents. Better than expected, improved more than most saw as possible. AND he has also become a better shooter than we thought.
Bumbalough who was the kid everyone expected to make the greatest contribution is not as good on offense and I think better on defense than we thought.
It's not chest thumping to point our how so many are negative about our recruits and we can be wrong about it. It's damned hard to do much as a freshman. It is unpredictable.
I wasn't thinking of you about Coleman, more halftime with his consistently negative opinion. I was in fact more positive than most on Coleman but mostly for the simple reason I watched him practice during the red shirt year. No brag there especially it was an easy call. But, in fact he has done more than I thought he could at this point. I was wrong too, but I did show a little respect for our staff and their ability to pick a recruit, and their ability to coach.
I suggest we should do that a little more often than we do. If we are going to call out BS we need to do it at both ends of the spectrum of opinion.

Whits recruits have generally been average, with a few exceptions. And so have the results.
