Looking at Conference-only stats this morning tells a tale as to our struggles, at times. Since we live or die by the three (by design), I started there. Through 12 games we are shooting .317 as a team and our higher volume shooters have regressed since league play started. Ish is now at .380, Maller is .365 and Bumb is down to .300. Coleman at an anemic .269 and Teague is at .306.
Other categories are also spotty. We have 146 assists and 148 turnovers. We've been out-rebounded 448-427. Our FT% is actually decent at .688.
Other factors in our regression, which was apparent on Saturday, is being too one-dimensional and lack of bench contributions. Teams have scouted your tendencies and know what to take away. We have shown an inability to adapt or throw different looks or wrinkles when we aren't able to shoot well. The trap/press we deployed on BG late in the game should have been utilized much sooner than with 3 minutes remaining and down by 20. How about a zone look just to break your opponents rhythm? Our bench has also been anemic. No consistency or spark.

Little "on the ball" pressure for the first ~15 minutes of the second half. This allowed BG to run the shot clock down on every possession. Their speed then blew by our man defense for relatively easy shots. I'm with ya---why not zone a bit, if nothing else, force a few outside shots. Problem is, we don't rebound well out of man defense; rebounding out of a zone might be even worse???

When your coach is either unable or unwilling to adapt and adjust.... (and maybe lacks instinctive feel that analytics just won’t compensate for?)

Can't disagree with anything said here but I will add that on Saturday I noticed repeatedly no one was near the basket when we shot and why was Teague not gotten the ball under the basket. He was able to drive and make contact. I believe 9 of his 21 came from free throws.

Whit doesn’t demand our stud get fed the ball consistently down low, plus he doesn’t demand our stud stay down low. He’s free to roam the perimeter. Opponents seem happy to let him stay out there. They know out of 10 shots he takes out there he’ll only hit 3. Plus he’s 22 feet away from offensive rebounds. Opponents like that too.

Good points cardfan. It seems as though we are so spread out trying to get a three that there is hardly ever anyone with even a chance at a rebound.

The fact that Teague is now shooting the three better than Bumb and Coleman is, well, um, scary.

Yr 7 Whit gets another chance to show us how good a coach he is. My thinking is if he gets wins in 3 of the 6 reg season games & wins 1 tourney game he will have exceeded my expectations.

Yawn.
As I have told you guys already, BSU will finish somewhat above .500 in the MAC, but go basically nowhere in the tourney. Also Whitford will be extended by BSU's dim bulb administration.
Whitford, being an utterly mediocre MAC coach due to his lack of recruiting horsepower, will putter along at a mediocre level indefinitely....sometimes being above .500 in the MAC and sometimes below. The administration will time the extensions so that they occur after one of the above .500 seasons.
Goetz has shown absolutely no sign whatsoever that she has any inclination, or capacity, to identify and hire an outstanding coach. If she has ever said or done anything outside of regurgitate the usual conventional wisdom talking points, I am not aware of it. So even if Whitford was to be replaced, I'd bet that BSU would compile a list of candidates based on all the usual, standard qualifications, meaning that we would shoot pretty low to avoid being out-bid by the better financed programs also looking for a coach.
It's just too depressing to care about. Unless and until BSU (miraculously) gets some sort of imaginative, innovative, original thinking person somewhere in the President/AD/Coach chain, the basketball program is stuck in the dismal rut it has been in for 20 years.

I have, for the most part, have not paid much attention this year. I think it is time to move on from the coach and there is nothing exciting about this team. And each time they almost draw me in, they help me out by laying an egg.
I mentioned in another thread that they are 1-5 in games decided by 5 points or less (1-6 if you move that to 6 points). Anyway, when the opposing team goes on a run or it comes down to crunch time, instead of going inside or trying to get close buckets, they seem content to launch away from long range. It's great if it goes. Most of time it doesn't.
You can watch the end of the Western game for that and the near collapse against Northern.
I don't get upset about it anymore.

I just don’t care much about basketball anymore because there is nothing there and hasn’t been for a long time. There’s no there, there. What’s even more defeating is knowing whit will be extended with the usual generic plaudits about “good kids, clean program” and “progress” and “some tough breaks”. All code for no money and no REAL interest in pursuing something better and so just live with it. We’ll see the same up and down crap again next year, if not worse, without Teague/mallers/Thompson/who the hell knows with Walton, etc. But, we do have that stellar class coming in next fall to look forward to... Beth, if you are aware of this board and/or are paying attention in general, more and more fans are feeling this way. Meh.

Does everyone see what is the common thread that runs through all of these posts...THE GUY IS NOT COACHING...that is his job and he is not doing it !!!!! We need a teacher of basketball. We need to TEACH these athletically gifted young men the game of basketball, not the game of playground dunk and shoot threes. HIRE A COACH and recruiters and we might have a chance. How hard is it? Look to NAIA to a program that is taught fundamentals, can perform them in a game situation, and is winning some games. After that hire some young assistants that are enthusiastic about the direction the new coach is headed to sign some kids that want to build a program to be proud of. The path the AD has taken is not working. Time to try something else.

There is no money to buy out Whit's contract.
I think that's pretty clear.
He's not going anywhere. His contract expires April 30, 2022. He'll be here until then.
