Winner of BSU at NIU game on Friday wins the MAC West and gets a bye to Cleveland. Buffalo holds the tie-breaker against us so if we win and Buffalo wins they are #3 and we are #4. If we win and they lose we are #3. If we lose we are #5. From Buffalos twitter site UB win | Ball St. win: This enters a three way tiebreaker between UB/Ball/NIU where combined H2H record is the tiebreaker. Ends up with Ball St. in the 3 seed, NIU in the 4 seed, UB in the 5 seed. Not sure which one would be correct Well we'd be 2-0 vs. NIU and 1-1 vs Buffalo (3-1). NIU beat Buffalo and would be 0-2 vs us (1-2) so yes, we would be #3 in that case. That is how the tie-breaker works in a three way.

So NIU has already clinched a bye. They are either the 3 or 4 seed. The only way Buffalo gets in is if they win and we lose. Is that how I am reading this?

If we win and they lose we are #3. If we lose we are #5. Akron now holds a 1 game lead over BG. If we are #5 and win on Monday night we'd most likely face Akron in Cleveland. We need to win Friday. If Buffalo loses at BG (likely) and BSU loses at N. Ill (likely) what would be the tie breaker Buffalo has over BSU? Both Buffalo and BSU would be 10-8 in the conference and split the two games played against each other. Is the tie breaker the result of the most recent head-to-head match-up in which Buffalo defeated BSU?

The first tie breaker is head to head (we split) and the second is division record. If we both lose our finale, Buff will be 5-5 and we will be 6-4. The only way Buff gets in is to win and we lose, if I’m reading the rules correctly.
To add some drama to all this, OU at BG at 6 and BSU at NIU at 8. We may actually know before or near tip-off whether we are already in.

1. Between two teams: A. Head-to-head competition; B. Division Record (only used if the two teams in question are tied for the Division lead); C. Winning percentage vs. ranked conference teams (top to bottom, regardless of division, vs. common opponents regardless of the number of times played); D. Coin flip
So, the division record won't come into play. BSU loses a two team tie breaker with Buff due to Buff's win over Akron. So if both lose, Buff gets the 4 spot.
Wait...unless Kent wins, then it's a 3=way, and somebody else can figure that one out. Kent is at Akron by the way.

Crap, Sherm I think you’re correct. I didn’t see the pesky asterisk. So Kent plays at Akron in their finale. Interesting that all three teams tryng for the last bye play at the three teams who have secured one already. For us it’s pretty simple then. Win and you’re in Cleveland. Lose and we’re playing at home Monday most likely.
