Here we are, going into March with still another mediocre D1 basketball team who cannot find a way to compete at a championship level. Seven years of Dim Whit is enough. The lack of serious in-game adjustment, basic recruiting and the inspirational leadership of coach speaks volumes. If this team can win out at home and beat NIU on the road I will be mighty impressed but I am not going to hold my breath. A long-time fan and poster on this site has repeatedly suggested that a "fish rots from the head down." It sure has been a long seven year stinky rot.

"a fish rots from the head" poster would be me. I first posted this about Bill Lynch in the midst of the 21 or higher losing streak that spanned at least three seasons. I sat at the Army game at West Point with YesMan, YesBoy and his then girl friend. I wanted to start a pool on Lynch's firing at the game, only to be denied by YesMan. I later learned of the many restrictions on recruiting by AD Andy Seger, and on admissions regarding grades. Admissions also had a negative effect on Buckley's recruiting. So I realized the head was higher up than the coach. It still is.
I don't believe any of these coaches have total ownership of their programs. Money certainly prevents that, and there may be other obstacles in the way. Until those that do the hiring and those on the BOT are outed, not much is going to change.
Here is a list of the MAC head coaches and their length left on contract and the buyouts. This is from a post on MAC message board.
Coaching Hot Seat I put together the below list, which shows how long each coach is under contract until and what the buyout would be if they were fired at the end of this season. I was curious which, if any, coaches do you think are on the hot seat?
Personally, I think Hawkins is the only one in real danger. His contract is up and I just don't see how they could possibly give him a multi-year extension. Murphy likely would have needed to have a catastrophically bad season for EMU to buy him out with one year left on his deal. Montgomery has already achieved enough this year that his job is safe. Keno Davis just got a contract extension in September. Senderoff isn't going anywhere. Everyone else is pretty much relatively new still or has too much money left on their deal to be bought out.
Team.............Coach.......Contracted Until Buyout WMU........Steve Hawkins...........2020…....….N/A EMU.........Rob Murphy..............2021……....$315k NIU.........Mark Montgomery.......2021……...$326K CMU........Keno Davis................2024…...….$500k Kent........Rob Senderoff...........2022....…….$580K UB..........Jim Whitesell.............2024....…….$600K Ball St.....James Whitford..........2022....…….$630k Miami......Jack Owens ..............2022..……....$700K OU..........Jeff Boals..................2024....…….$850K Akron.......John Groce...............2023....…….$1.2M BGSU.......Michael Huger...........2024....…….$1.6M UT...........Tod Kowalczyk..........2026....…….$2M

Wow, Whitsell at Buffalo is a steal at only $150,000 per year. Thanks for doing the research; quite informative.

I sincerely hope barring a surprising deep MAC tournament run that Whitford isnt extended. Obviously its unlikely hes removed but an extension would make it more difficult to make a decision on him in March of 2021. Hopefully this is a moot point but I'm not holding my breath.

Does anyone know the salaries of all our coaching staff, not just Whitford?

Is it possible Whitford already has the “phantom extension” that Neu received? Just skipped the step of notifying media?
Based on last season comparison, he has the “program direction” box checked, MAC All-1st team, FOY, returning 6th year SEC player, MAC-leading defensive strategery, attendance increase.....I’m sure I’ve left a lot out.
The decision is easy and the athletic department is ALL about easy decisions. “Stay the course...Thousand points of light....”

Well, it’s March a time of madness. Anything could happen right? I’d guess we will win tomorrow, lose Friday, win next Monday as we host a first round game and then who knows. I wouldn’t be surprised if we stand pat on this staff but I’d be surprised at an extension. The needle is trending meh. Let’s see if Taj and this team have anything left in the tank these next two weeks.

Still has two years left. No need to extend yet.

The ROI on $300k ain’t what it used to be.

Whitesell has an interesting path to the Buffalo spot. Successful in D3 and D2, then hired by Loyola IL. Initially doing OK (but not great) for a few years, he was fired after three consecutive 8th place Horizon league finishes in years 5,6 and 7. I imagine he recruited poorly and suffered the usual consequences. Became an assistant at StJohns, then Buffalo, and stepped into the spot vacated by Oates.
Don't think I would have been especially excited by the hire as a Buffalo fan, but at least they didn't try to outbid everyone for a candidate out of the conventional wisdom pool. Had I been on their hiring committee, I would have questioned him VERY forcefully on how he intends to improve his recruiting. If he has somehow figured out how to recruit better than he did at Loyola, he could succeed. If not, he won't. Maybe he learned a thing or two from Oates?

I hope Reality is wrong...I believe we beat Central and I personally believe the NIU game is a toss up...could still get a 4 seed.

I hope Reality is wrong...I believe we beat Central and I personally believe the NIU game is a toss up...could still get a 4 seed. I'm just going on the odds. We are 7-1 at home and 2-6 on the road. A win at NIU wouldn't be even close to shocking. If you haven't figured us out yet it's pretty simple. If we shoot well from the arc we are probably winning and if we don't, especially on the road we are going down. Regardless of our seeding, the question comes down to whether we can win 4 or 3 in a row. Can we? I suppose so. Will we? Not likely. You have to get hot, a little lucky and out coach the opponents. I think the first two are far more possible than the last factor.
