I’m not sure having the leader of our country telling people “it’ll go away” is merely downplaying to prevent panic and save the economy. It’s willful ignorance of how a pandemic virus works.
Ask Italy how they’re doing now.

I think my attitude is better than the hysterics and panic that seem to be prevailing over common sense these days. I do admire how calm you are, and it is a virtue not to panic.
Are you really sure it is common sense that washing your hands will be enough?
I guess it is just an extra few percent of the population dying. A small matter.

I guess it is just an extra few percent of the population dying. A small matter. In the grand scheme of things, it is. Look, the US has 3.1 cases per million people. That's far down the list compared to, say, countries in the European Union. With their fancy open borders and socialized health care! Totally coincidental, I'm sure. Hardly a reason to act like it's the zombie apocalypse. Now excuse me, I must go stock up on bleach and toilet paper...

All right this is going to be one of those threads that ultimately someone is going to get pissed off.. Keep it civil and keep all things corona in here.. Yeah I opened Pandora's Box a little bit on this one, so I'll take the blame. It wasn't my intention to turn things political, just to note that we have no idea what the actual numbers are for this, since we're not testing at the rates we should be. To get things back ON topic, women's games in Cleveland start today. BSU tips off 30 minutes following Game 6, so "roughly" 5pm. Let's go mighty lady Chirp Chirps!

I’m taking it seriously but I’m not remotely panicked. To me the more information we have, the better. Legit info that is. Not social media “experts”

Your point being that there's no need to panic, whereas this gif is representing a real reason to panic trying to be massaged away by an idiot. A lovable idiot, but a doofus nontheless

If you belong to a group that is at-risk, then I'd expect you to take every precaution. If you're a healthy person under 60, then don't freak out. I'm just saying that I feel like the media is overhyping this for ratings and to dig at Trump. I don't think the administration has really done anything bad on this, they're just trying to keep people calm by reassuring the public that it's not the end of the world.

Well my honest opinion is the administration is more about “messaging” and making sure the boss looks good vs taking enough real, timely, science based actions. That’s my opinion, regardless of what comes out of the media.

I just wonder how different this all would be if it were 10 years ago and we were not a social media obsessed world yet

It is definitely a case where CDC and HHS were unprepared. Some of it by design, on purpose. That is in large part why the information available was not accurate. Budget cuts were made to health agencies and scientists and health care professionals have been restricted in their activities for several years. The agency responsible for response to this kind of health threat was disbanded. Health care experts were let go this year, including those who normally would have gone to China and gathered information.
Besides that of course, the administration pointedly has ignored the information that is available, especially the President.
Asian kits use the same components, of which there was a shortage. So while yes, they use different kits, they use the same components. If you want to talk about whether budget cuts to those areas were defensible, that's a matter of opinion. With hindsight, maybe not. The administration wasn't ignoring the threat, it downplayed it to prevent panic from wrecking the economy. But the media can't have that, can they? So, under your theory, the rest of world grabbed up those components available while we slept on it and we didn't. Even though it was reasonably likely we were going to need a response, we ignored it. Didn't ramp up production when we saw it happening.
Why did we not have the resources to do in the budget for that? Whose fault is that?
As far as "protecting the economy" by risking public health, I am not convinced that is a good idea?
How did that go by the way? The administration has bungled that.
If you want panic you are going to get it by downplaying real risk, issuing conflicting statements, undercutting your experts, reprimanding and muzzling public health officials for accurate low key warnings, and expressing ignorant belief that this will all go away like a miracle.
