Also, the golfer was Jamie “Broce”.

I guess it's in how you define memorable. Intensely life-long memorable to a small group of people, or generally memorable so that a significant percentage of a larger population can actually remember it some years later. Disagree. I'd have to say there are many a person in Tennessee to whom that loss to Ball State was and is still memorable. Just because it's not on your radar doesn't make it non memorable other people.

Surely, there was something before 1983.
I did find on the interwebs that someone named Patricia Bergman won 3 national titles in swimming back in 1970 and 71. Not memorable, I guess, but noteworthy.

Interestingly, the final sentence of the lengthy and impressive Wikipedia summary of Pat Summit's career is the following: "The 2008–09 season ended with a dubious first, as the Lady Vols lost 71–55 in the first round of the NCAA tournament to Ball State in Bowling Green, Kentucky, marking the first time Tennessee would not appear in the Sweet 16 since the NCAA first sanctioned championships in women's basketball for the 1981–82 season"
However, as you alluded, there are probably more people in Tennessee than in Muncie who remember this game. I'm not sure that's what the DN guy was really looking for, but whatever.
The Pat Summit Wikipedia is worth reading. She won 8 national championships. Here was a person who knew what she was doing. You should always tip your cap to competence like that. Also this: "On at least two occasions, Tennessee asked Summitt to consider coaching the men's team: once before 1997[68] and again in 2001"
It's a shame this never happened. That would have been an extremely interesting experiment. As we all know, recruiting is the dominating factor in CBB coaching success. Would that have worked? It would have been fascinating to find out. She was obviously killing it in women's recruiting. But the key demographic for basketball recruiting is more conservative in certain ways than most people like to think about.

I don’t know Sherm, she did have former Ball State Men’s Basketball coach Get out of town Al Brown as her assistant for years.

Not memorable, I guess, but noteworthy. 1976 MAC football championship in our second year in the MAC. For me I remember our first game at Miami. I had just interviewed for a job, but told them the interview had to be over in time to make it to Oxford for the game. Earl Taylor ran for tons of yards (a Miami transfer)and we lost a close game that everyone thought we would be destroyed in. Dave McClain, the best Ball State coach ever was our leader. The bees chased people during the whole game. Their stadium at the time was a poor excuse of an Ohio high school stadium. They had just won three consecutive bowl games against SEC teams. The following year we won the MAC the conference had their bowl tie-in cancelled. We sat at home. People in San Diego were mad we didn’t make it to their initial bowl game as San Diego State had suffered the same fate we did that year. Still, the best two years of Ball State football as we proved we belonged in the MAC.
