We were not wrong in our analysis of his game. But the kid has a lot of physical Talent and I hope he lands somewhere and develops into a player worthy of being on a roster. He’ll never be a starter but maybe he could develop into a viable backup at some point.

The phrase “throwing good money after bad” comes to mind.

He'll get an invite to a camp and likely be a practice squad player for a while, I think that's about as far as he gets

Agree. He doesn’t have innate traits like pocket feel or the confidence to just cut it loose. The midrange throws were his best. The screens/short boundary and short throws over the middle, not so much.

I just do not see it. He needs a great deal of work if he is to play on Sundays. If Keith Wenning could not make Neal does not have much of a chance. Some team might keep him on the practice squad for a couple years and that is about it.

Certainly a good point on Wenning, bsu0. Neal is a bit bigger, I think, and a bit more mobile, but throwingwise there is no comparison.

Certainly a good point on Wenning, bsu0. Neal is a bit bigger, I think, and a bit more mobile, but throwingwise there is no comparison. Neal's arm strength blows away Keith's, but Keith is infinitely smarter and has a ton more grit. Keith was a winner. Riley is a dud.

Just read in CS Gazette article from Woody Paige saying how Elway like tall QBs & he thinks Neal has good chance to stick on practice squad which will be 12 men this season. My thought was you have never seen Neal throw.

I saw Neal throw a lot over the seasons we had him. He just did not have the take charge attitude that a top notch qb has to have. Stating that is not saying one has to yell and scream and try to be a tough guy. Montana had it and it was rather low key. Terry Bradshaw had it and was one of the guys. Bob Griese had it and was quiet most of the time. Neal had some tools but it seemed the team looked to others for leadership. He could throw the ball hard but his long throws (over 15-20 yds) were very seldom on the money. He seemed not to look to his secondary receivers well and because of that he ran a little to often. I could go on. I personally hope that Elway is correct and I am way off base and Neal has a long and productive career on Sunday afternoons. I attended the Northwestern game his freshman year that we blew and should have won in Evanston. I walked out of that game feeling good even though we lost and Neal lost a crucial fumble that was costly. I thought we had the qb of the future but Neal failed to evolve from that point forward much.

The Northwestern game is when Neal got hit hard in the thighs while running, and started limping a bit. He never seemed the same after that, almost like he got scared.

Prior to that he was slinging the ball and running with abandon. Lembo dialed him back as well, I suppose to try to preserve him. He did have a huge passing game vs NIU but after that he looked terrible and never really got “it” back. He was tentative the rest of his time at BSU and kept getting hurt. Losing that northwestern game, which we just about had won til a fumble near the goal line took everything out of that team. I hope Riley finds his mojo and makes something of all the talent he has.

Also, considering some family issues (especially with his dad), I wouldn't rule out a mental block as well.
