Only against smaller guys, that's true. But in college he'd be able to bull over Hunt and have more contact. Maybe I'm hungover and just confused by what your saying.. Unless alot has changed in 6 months there is no way sparks can physically bull over Hunt and or especially a real a mac big guy. If he matures maybe he can do that in a couple years. Hunt's a pretty solid kid, I agree, I'm just saying small HS play doesn't prepare Sparks to play tough, and it's hard to tell what he'll do or can do.

Let's see...trying to sort this out. The smaller Hunt shuts down Sparks through physicality and athleticism, but in college, where the refs allow more contact...uh....Hunt would be able to bully him even more...so...uh...high school refs didn't PREPARE Sparks to play tough...so...you see...uh.
Well, whatever. the important thing is that there is an EXCUSE in there somewhere.

Well, whatever. the important thing is that there is an EXCUSE in there somewhere. C'mon Sherm, what I said was that big players have to play somewhat more timidly in HS to avoid fouls. And especially small school players in weaker competition have a tough time adjusting to college rules which allow physical play, and have to learn to use their size in ways they can't usually do in HS. Almost always they need to add muscle and gain quickness and get used to a much faster game.
In HS playing against much more bulky opponents you can get position and draw fouls and prevent the big guy from using his size. That same player in college can use his size but of course is now matched against equal size. The change to college has two things that offset. Those small school players have to change their physical make up and style of play to adjust.
Sparks will have to rely on more than size, add muscle and learn to play tougher than he is used to. Otherwise he won't be much use early. That's a lot to expect of a freshman, and freshmen big men usually aren't very effective that first year. Hunt's physical development and toughness would not be enough to stop him one on one in college. In HS it was.
As for Hunt, he is smaller than sparks but is a pretty strong guy who could offset Sparks size. Especially under rules that punish incidental contact(and awkward big guys). Especially where Sparks just wasn't used to guys who play physically and have anything close to his size. Hunt would not be a post player in college. He would have different challenges to have a chance to play, not lack of physical development and strength.

Bottom line, it’ll be a major surprise if Sparks can contribute any meaningful minutes as a freshman. Redshirt him and help him develop. There’s a ton of adjustments he’ll have to make and styles of play to learn. Big guys like him are most likely developmental.

One reservation, I am not sure about red shirt if he shows up in the Fall and looks like he has a chance to contribute by season's end. And, also whether Huggy or Hendricks can do more than they have shown. If he is the best we have...and if we really need him...

With excuses already being made for him, I don't see that a redshirt will be necessary at all. Seems like he's ready to step right into Whitford's program on day 1.

I went over to Brownsburg a couple of weeks ago to watch my niece play as a Junior All Star versus the Indiana All Star team. Stayed around and watched the boys game and this years crop as well as next years crop of boys players from our state is outstanding. Blake Wesley is an absolute stud. Looks like his dad but more explosive and he can shoot it. This kid has NBA written all over him if he can stay healthy as he like his father is quite thin. The former Cardinals boy is a big time player. I really like Jalen Jackson out if Carrol from Ft.Wayne. I was sitting next to his parents and he is finally starting to get some attention from the state division 1 schools. He is a big strong point guard who can get to the rim and he sees the floor very well. He is athletic and plays with a chip on his shoulder. I asked mom if Ball State was involved and she said they were starting to come into the picture. She mentioned lots of MAC schools as well as ISU, Ft.Wayne. Evansville, Loyola showing interest. Jackson is the type of guard we have been missing as he is tough, hard nosed and can play. Hope we pursue him. FYI, my niece committed to Michigan along with a girl from Carmel. Michigan’s women’s team is loaded with talent from Indiana.

If we NEED to play a raw freshman center who probably isn’t really ready to play then we’re hurting.

Sparks may end up being pretty good and I think he could probably score a few points a game next year but from what I saw a few months ago he 8s just a kid a redshirt would really help.. There is always the possibility that he has been hitting the weights hard and he comes in 10-20 pounds heavier and he's good to go

I’m confident he’s more skilled than Higgins and stronger than Hendricks, but that bar isn’t real high.

Why waste 1 of his 4 years with a coach that will not utilize him like he should be used? You know Whitford will have him hanging around the 3-point line instead of being under the basket.
