How did they get that work phone connected to you? I'm in the book. Like a phone book is that still a thing

How did they get that work phone connected to you? I'm in the book. I am surprised they would call a "yellow pages" listing or commercial listing, especially cold call. VERY little of that.
The calls are made based on a database of information provided by the alum or donor.
You may have given them that information. But if you designate it as work, you will not be called unless you were a corporate donor.

They obviously knew it was a work number based on the prefix.

They obviously knew it was a work number based on the prefix. BSU is always trying to find alums who have not been in contact, and I can see how possibly a business contact number got on a call list. But rarely.

But rarely. So what you're saying is they are sometimes rude pests who make unsolicited calls, and you really have no idea how often that happens. And maybe it's really not the kids' fault but sometimes employees need to be told things by customers in a forthright manner, sometimes with a certain attitude, to make sure the message gets passed along to the right people. Being nice to people rarely earns a notation beside your name that says "Never call this son-of-a-bitch again." And in this case, that notation is exactly what the customer wants.

No, mills.
Kids who are not in any way offensive are enlisted to talk to alums who are bona fide contacts. Yes, mistakes are possible. But, the kids are not pests, or obnoxious.
Having helped with phone efforts like this and watched calls, sometimes called to the phone to talk to an alum who remembers a class or other contact, or wants info the student caller doesn't have, I know this works well.
Have never had the case where somebody who is called reacts harshly or acts out. But the protocol is there for that scenario.
Very professional, well planned fund raising. Most universities do this.

The kids are not the pest; the call is the pest. But you proved just what I said. There's a protocol for people who react harshly. They get their point across.

My daughter went to a university with an endowment of 11 BILLION dollars. That's billion with a "b". A billion is a thousand million.
Sometimes they would interrupt my evenings with an unsolicited call asking for more of my money. Sorry, but this is an obnoxious and rude thing to do and everyone involved should be ashamed of themselves.

Sorry, but this is an obnoxious and rude thing to do and everyone involved should be ashamed of themselves. And a BSU student representing a school that benefited you, that is the caller who deserves to answer for this grievous offense, and the best response you can think of to the problem is to be rude, and obnoxious yourself. Great logic Sherman.

Do you have a tape of that call? Who said I was rude and obnoxious?

Do you have a tape of that call? Who said I was rude and obnoxious? Ah.
Perhaps it was when you characterized it as a rant, I got the idea, and certainly I suspect the kid on the other end might have seen a rant in response to his call that way.
Since you believe it was just a polite expression of opinion, but also that somehow the "polite" rant put you on a list not to be called back, that may also have misled me. .
Sorry.

I'm sure the kid was somewhere between mildly amused and bored...probably closer to bored.... with my rant which was clearly directed at decision makers and not him. I can't remember in this particular case, but I might have frankly, but politely and without hostility, suggested to him that there were jobs to be found that DON'T involve pestering people in their homes.

I had a telemarketer call me a racist a-hole because I told him that if they're going to be bothering me at all hours of the day, they should at least hire an American to do it. (His opener was, "'Ello, good sir, my nem ees... Jeem." I instantly doubted the veracity of his claim, and yes, I was satisfied with my current car warranty.)

My rule is if it's a telemarketer with anonymous caller ID info they get the gruff treatment.

Generally I don't answer if it's a number not in my contacts, but if I'm bored, I'll string them along for a while. 35 minutes is my personal best. I try to sound like an old feeb (which is becoming easier, unfortunately), and talk really, reaaalllllyyyyyy sssssllllllloooooowwwwwwwww...
"My credit card number is... are you ready? It's 2. Did you get that? The first number is 2. Okay, are you ready for the second number?" And so on. Of course I throw in a letter or an ampersand, and I never have enough digits. I figure the more time I spend on the phone, the less time they have for someone else.
You're welcome.
