Yeah they aren't going to win the press conference but he could turn out to be a really good coach. At least they are trying.

Being with Whit for a couple years, hopefully the suck hasn't taken hold of him.

I don't think the time with Whitford rules out the possibility Crenshaw will be a successful coach. For IUPUI's sake, I hope their search and hiring group was competent and asked some good, smart, hard questions and got responses that indicated Crenshaw has a good plan, character and energy to succeed. Maybe they did, or maybe they are as bad at this as BSU is...I have no idea.
However, per the Sherman Plan, there is absolutely no reason for IUPUI to commit to Crenshaw for more than 2 years at this point. I don't imagine they are having to out bid anyone for Crenshaw and If Crenshaw is the coach they want, he should have total certainty that his performance and the state of the program, all things considered, will be such that IUPUI would not dream of letting him go. If Crenshaw demands a longer commitment, he is in effect saying "I might be really disappointing to you in 3 or 4 years, so I need to tie you down with a contract that makes is very difficult for you to fire me." Is that what they want? If he is such an uninspiring recruiter, that recruits need to see the long contract to be reassured he won't be fired, then he is NOT going to be a very good recruiter.
If I'm looking at a new coach candidate who is demanding a long contract, I tell them "If you don't believe in yourself, I don't believe in you either. Thank you, drive through."

I don't mind giving a coach a longer contract for appearances sake. Just so the coach can say publicly he's got a 4-5 year deal. No big deal.
However, I would say the contract should be structured so if the school wants to fire them after 3 years, they can do it without having to break the bank.
At the same time, I'm fine with loading up on bonuses if the coach hits meaningful goals.
