So all the 2020 freshman get a free extra year due to covid correct? So they could all possibly then redshirt this year. So if redshirted they could all be here six years. Free year, redshirt year then four years to play.. Am I right with this thinking? If so this really messes with recruiting cycles

Free year, redshirt year then four years to play.. Am I right with this thinking? If so this really messes with recruiting cycles I think you're right. And it does create some problems. All assuming the players aren't recruited over and decide to enter the portal. Or assuming, gasp, they graduate and want to go with real life.
Coaches could use this as a way to avoid recruiting the lower tier of kids that are long shots to ever play. With the portal reality that might be the way recruiting goes.
We'll be signing kids to develop for bigger schools, too. The portal and the Covid year together makes roster management a nightmare, that recruiting cycle is an oxymoron along the lines of military intelligence.

I think it was a mistake to grant the extra free year. A nice thought, but a mistake. Long term ramifications. Same with the free transfer year.

It was done as a feel-good publicity stunt, but the reality is that it has totally screwed up the next several years. Sometimes life gives you a shit sandwich. It's up to you whether to take a bite.

I think it was a mistake to grant the extra free year. A nice thought, but a mistake. Long term ramifications. Same with the free transfer year. It's forcing change. It was good for the players to the extent they are in school mostly for football. It is questionable on academic grounds for a large number of players.
This on year free trip in the portal thing added in will have bigger long term ramifications for recruiting and coaching, that will hurt marginal players at the lower levels, hurt kids who sign with big schools and get recruited over by transfer, create chaos for mid level and low level recruiting. As usual the rich get richer. The big guys now have a lot of farm teams.

And it forces coaching staffs to be assholes and say we do not want you anymore. No way around it after 21 the roster size goes back to normal. ALL schools will have to dump 15-25 kids

I think they should have allowed it if the school didnt play or the kid opted out. As is I do think it was a mistake.

ALL schools will have to dump 15-25 kids No doubt, some hurt. Some don't come back at most schools. Some go portal. Some shouldn't have been signed... Some plusses here too.
