Whit regurgitating. Taking the path of least resistance. (Or path of finding someone, anyone to board an already sinking ship).
Some truly new blood on the bench is needed but then Whit is gonna coach how he’s gonna coach no matter who the assistants are.

"Wright coached Western Illinois for six seasons, winning 53 games."
Jeez, do the math on that.
Finished 8th three times and 9th three times in a 9 team league. Best conference record in 6 years was 5-11. Damn, now THAT is a bad coaching record. Possibly a record for worst 6-year D1 coaching record of all time? A good fit for our culture, I suppose.

Can't you be a terrible head coach and a good assistant?

After reading two releases on this hire, I find it strange that there is no mention of what he has been doing the past few years (unless I've overlooked it); in other words it would appear he's been out of coaching for a while. On a different note, I really like what Stan Heath is doing at Eastern; he may turn that program around in a hurry: hoopdirt.com/eastern-michigan-mens-basketball-staff-update/

They (Western Illinois) beat us at Worthen 69-62 in 2019.
Perhaps our next head coach.

Can't you be a terrible head coach and a good assistant? Actually you can. We've had several of them. Remember Stan Parish? Don't take me wrong, I'm not trying to suggest I'm pleased with this hire

Does this look like the most qualified and best choice from among a large group of interesting and exciting candidates?
Or does this look like one of a few (or maybe the only one) who was available and considered?
Does a somewhat older assistant, with a wife and a kid, and the experience of dismal failure after previously moving up, look like the sort that will bring the much needed personality, enthusiasm and energy to recruiting that is so obviously Whitford's need?
Everyone can consider and answer these questions for themselves.

In today's transfer portal world, the only way a mid-major (in my opinion) can be successful is to retain your best players with a passionate, engaging head coach and staff. The days of March Madness upsets may be over unless the "little guys" can find a way to keep players 4 years, which is the main reason these upsets have always happened!

I'm not going to argue on the other points but the dismal failure after previously moving up happens to most coaches. They flame out and go back to being assistants. What are they supposed to do? Go sell insurance?

My point is not that the dismal head coaching failure assistant is always a bad assistant, but that he is likely to be a different sort of assistant than the hot-to-trot, ambitious young assistant. My further point is that dismal head coaching failure assistant isn't likely to have the recruiting enthusiasm of the young hot-to-trot ambitious assistant. And my even further point is that Whitford, having less personality than wilted celery, needs all the recruiting enthusiasm help he can get.
And without having any direct knowledge of the process of this hire, it sure as hell looks like Whitford simply took the lazy path of least resistance here. Somebody whose number he already had on his phone, somebody out of the loop with no competing options. As if we needed more indications that this program is slowly circling the drain.
I might also add that the level of failure experienced by Wright does not "happen to most coaches". Rather I would say it is very rare...if not totally unique. How many years can most coaches fail to rise above 2nd to last in their conference and keep their job? Not usually 6.

Whit is only interested in players that fit our "culture", so I would assume that goes for coaches as well. This guy would seem to fit right in. "If you take a deep dive into the statistics, you’ll see a team that struggled mightily across the board. Throughout Wright’s tenure, the Leathernecks were one of the worst teams in the nation at free throws and offensive rebounding, among other key statistics." Sound familiar............... bustingbrackets.com/2020/03/04/western-illinois-basketball-billy-wright-fired-after-6-years-as-head-coach/
