I'm sure that a team that finished last or next to last in their conference every year over a 6 year period will have a variety of ugly stats. That's a natural consequence of being terrible. But the CAUSE of being terrible was undoubtedly the same old, usual issue...poor recruiting. But Whitford can afford to take it easy and settle for readily available assistants with poor recruiting backgrounds because his dynamic personality and manic energy level covers over all sorts of recruiting problems.

I'm approaching this hire with unbridled optimism not because Wright is the right choice but rather he was the only guy willing to come. That may be the sign we've hoped for that no extension is forthcoming and this year may be the merciful end to this coaches generic vanilla tenure.

Truthfully, if we consider that Whit might now actually be a lame duck, this is a better hire than I expected us to be able to make. I fully expect our next assistant coach hire to be someone who was a grad assistant last year.

Some people's posts are sarcastic, others dripping with sarcasm. Yours, my good Sherm, are marinated for several days until they positively ooze sarcasm. It's one of your gifts. Also just heard that Grunk may be gone? Crazy.

. But the CAUSE of being terrible was undoubtedly the same old, usual issue...poor recruiting. It's poor recruiting combined with a lack of fundamentals. Success at either requires daily diligence, failure requires neglect. We know exactly where Whitford stands..................

Ahhh, the latest gem of an article by Guskey on our new/old assistant coach. It's classic Guskey who can put whipped cream on a turd like a veteran PR guy. Here's a really encouraging quote from the article:
Wright doesn’t hide from the fact that, while he felt his teams at WIU checked a lot of boxes and he’s proud of them, he “didn’t check the most important one.” He looks to what he believes are highlights on and off the court, academically and athletically, which included a road win against Wisconsin the season after the Badgers were the runners-up in the NCAA tournament. But he also owns the 53-115 record he left with and acknowledges “we just couldn’t sustain it,” and “in this business, you got to win.”
It's exciting that he already has all the built-in excuses that normally assistants aren't prepared to shovel. "We just couldn't sustain it" would infer you achieved some level at success in recruiting or wins or concession sales or something. Here is the six-year run of this hoops genius. 8-20, 10-17, 8-20, 12-16 (the pinnacle), 10-21, 5-21. I would argue you did sustain something, Billy. It's called losing.
Now Wright — who indicated resources may have been an issue at Western Illinois in addition to injuries — is joining a staff at Ball State that’s attempting to take BSU to its first NCAA tournament since 2000.
Holy Cow, way to set the table, bro! You clearly learned from your one year stint on this staff.
I am sensing a seismic shift in our fortunes. However, it may involve a large fissure opening and swallowing our program. Magma...there might also be magma. I just like saying magma.

I am glad BSU's direction for the program is now crystal clear.

Well, one thing is completely certain: NOBODY can say this isn't a good culture fit. In fact, it might be the best assistant/program culture fit in the history of NCAA basketball.

Linc Darner has been added to the coaching staff. He was A better HC than Whitford has proved to be.
