I say he is next in line.

All this with Whitford and his contract reminds me of the Seinfield episode where George is working at Play Now, a playground equipment company. When George is hired he has a cane so the higher-ups at Play Now think he is handicapped. Of course, George milks his injury as much as he can until Play Now finally discovers that he is in fact not handicapped. As a result of this Play Now no longer likes George, and they want him out. Play Now took certain siege tactics in order to try to get George to quit before his one-year contract is up (so that they won't have to pay him), but George withstands each obstacle. Eventually, the company resorts to locking George out of his office and opening his previously private bathroom to the public.
Great episode!

Don't know exactly what happened to him at Green Bay! They fired him with 6 years left on his contract. He was successful everywhere though he was a little better than average at Green Bay. He did get his team to the NCAA tournament so you have that. He has a ton of experience and looks as if he has recruited well at some of his stops. He will have contacts in the Midwest so that is good. I do find it odd that he was let go with so many years left on his contract and both parties have been quiet on why he was let go. Very strange if you ask me!

No one seems to know why he was let go but most fans and media seem to think it was a bad decision. Everything I've read points at him being a good coach

Speculation was the AD (prez?) did it for financial reasons because of his contract and salary. At the time Jeff Goodman reported that Darner was blindsided by it. Players really liked him. Who knows.

We hire him cheap. Can't see how their buyout makes money for them.
Maybe the Sherman Plan?

Who do we think made this hire? Whitford? Or Goetz?

Who do we think made this hire? Whitford? Or Goetz? I’m sure Whitford did but he’s lucky Darner fell into his lap after Darner got back on the market after collecting his settlement for a year. Beth has probably been busy interviewing for the Wisky job.

Very interesting. Darner has been, like, 500 times more successful than Whitford as a head coach.

So for him to take an assistant's job when he could probably afford to sit out a year or 2 if he wanted makes me wonder if there hasn't been a promise or two made (and I wouldn't think Whitford would be the one to make that promise). BTW, haven't actually seen Darner in a couple of years. A Google search for images has me liking what I see. He's appears on the way to something Majerus-esque.

He and Chandler would make a formidable tag team. They are slated to take on the Road Warriors this weekend at the coliseum.

So, do we think we have upgraded the overall coaching staff with the replacements?

This Darner hiring is the first thing about BSU basketball I've felt good about in a while.

Who do we think made this hire? Whitford? Or Goetz? I’m sure Whitford did but he’s lucky Darner fell into his lap after Darner got back on the market after collecting his settlement for a year. According to the Green Bay paper Darner was making about $230,000 per year and reached a settlement of about $750,000 paid out over three years. So Darner likely took this job to get his foot in the door and it wouldn't surprise me if Whitford didn't make this hire.
