From the SP article:
“We had a tumultuous year, for sure, and not the year that we wanted to have,” said Whitford, who added last week he puts pressure on himself each year as well. “But I believe prior to this year the program was in a very healthy place and I’m confident we will get it back there … (The fans) have to adapt to the new, changing world just like I do, because I don’t think it’s going to change … I’m confident that we’re going to put another exciting team and we’re going to get our team back to the top of the West and try to take that one more step that we haven’t had … We’re as eager to get there as they are and I appreciate them hanging with us and confident we’ll have a good team for them this year.”
If that's not a huge "fuck you" to the fans, I don't know what is.

Also:
"Whitford is looking to guide BSU to its first NCAA tournament since 2000. Maybe that journey will happen if the Cardinals can figure out what’s been keeping them from having much success against teams that have been in the MAC’s East Division, which has had a team knock Whitford’s out of the conference tournament six times in the past seven tournaments, although Whitford said “I don’t have my finger put on” why the general issue has persisted. Whitford said it is something they’re looking at significantly."
Lack of a talented big man, a defensive enforcer, or a shooter that can create his own shot? Poor recruiting? Not being dedicated to the job?
That enough fingers for ya?

In short this team is ill prepared to compete against good opponents. Why, because Whitford allows players to go through the motions in practice. It's been obvious from year one.

Yeah and how was BSU's season more tumultuous than any other team ?

I don't know if anyone has been following the saga of the UC Bearcats and their fired coach - John Brannen. This nugget is from today's Cincinnati Enquirer that was detailing the subsequent lawsuit that has followed the firing:
"Meantime, former UC star Jarron Cumberland gave an interview to The Athletic in which he unloaded on Brannen. The coach’s faults? His practices were too hard"
And this -
Cumberland said he was throwing up after every practice.
We will never hear that said about a Whitford practice.

"I’m confident that we’re going to put another exciting team and we’re going to get our team back to the top of the West"
Two questions: 1) don't you first have to have AN exciting team before you can have ANOTHER exciting team? 2) The MAC west is coming back? In the name of all that is holy, NOOOOOOO.

Why, because Whitford allows players to go through the motions in practice. It's been obvious from year one. I have watched a fair amount of BSU practice since 1976. Do not see the "going through the motions" you hypothesize for this team.
Whitford is not as intense as some coaches, in practice, or games. Neither was Ray, for example. But very much like other college coaches in how practices are run.
I am not going to say he couldn't do better, would benefit a bit from some Dick Hunsaker, maybe, but in today's basketball, I can't say for sure players would respond to intensity. Not like UCinn was killing it with hard practices being the key to coaching success.
So I can only say I am disappointed in the results on the court, and certainly not say that the practices are the problem because they generally allow players to just go through the motions.

"That was an attempted sales pitch, and a really bad one at that." Funny, that's the exact same thing about 95% of his recruiting targets say after an in-home visit!

Coach Steven Cooksey was head coach then after replacing Rushton; although Rushton came back as an assistant coach my junior and senior years.

You are the biggest apologist for Whitford on these boards. His record speaks volumes...he needs to go!

Have you ever once witnessed Whitford throwing a guy out of practice for not playing hard ? It isn't about intensity, it about setting standards and sticking to them. Brad Stevens isn't intense but he threw guys out of practice all the time. Practices should be tougher than games, you can't tell me Whitford runs tough hard nosed sessions like that. This team is way too soft.

I remember talking with Cory Ryan, who played for Dakich at Bowling Green, and he said most all of their team injuries, no matter how minor or major, came during practices because they were soooooo intense.

Here's a very simple question that should have a very simple answer. Is James a great leader?
