Well it looks like the kid did what we said he might need to do on his own and is going to come in more physically ready than we thought. It's impressive he did it on his own shows work ethic and dedication. Now I don't believe a word whit says but we know what we have with Huggins and the Canucks so if the kid is in shape Baptism by fire might be the best route

"I think you always have to be careful as a coach getting too far in front of yourself"................Had to laugh at that comment.

I have to see it, but being in shape, working hard is good news.
Hope other newcomers are as motivated.

I found the quotations from Darner interesting. I don't remember articles from previous years featuring that type of input from assistant coaches. I'm wondering, probably more hoping, we have more of a twin-headed coaching situation this year. The theory would be Darner still thinks of himself as a head coach and Whitford's submissive personality allows Darner more influence than an assistant coach would normally have.
Probably wrong, just hoping for something different this year in Whitford year 9.

I thought immediately the coaches were making a bit of a mistake to talk much about him.
Not that it's a bad story, but they should be hyping an upper class player who has been around and can handle it.
Does a freshman need any more pressure?
Maybe they will pivot to other players soon enough, this team has to be about how they find scoring to replace the lost players, and develop numbers which we lacked.

What, exactly, would anyone hype about the current upperclass big men? These are two guys who, despite a huge need and a gaping hole in the line up, can't either one manage as many as three points or rebounds per game. Saying that "it’s very safe to say he’s in the mix for being in the rotation." with the current stiffs is not exactly hyping someone to the moon. But anyway, losing 30+ lb of body fat in a summer is an accomplishment to be proud of.

But anyway, losing 30+ lb of body fat in a summer is an accomplishment to be proud of. Good points. But, who said it should be an upper class big man as the focus of the story? I doubt big men are the story of this season.
I would have preferred the first news about the coming season focus on the upperclassmen on the team who are more critical to success, and who are used to a bit of press attention. Even if Sparks makes heroic strides and becomes a starter, it is unlikely as a freshman he is more than a role player, although a most welcome one! If every game one or more of the three big men give us a total all together of 20-25 minutes of decent play it will be welcome news.
The story was overall just fine, with a human interest angle. Sparks deserves credit for what he has done, and I welcome news about the team, mention of Darner and Whitford praising a player and so on.
It's more the idea freshmen should be seen not heard, and coaches should focus press attention on the team, especially a team which may not have a dominant star player. Among 6 newcomers and some unproven returning players we have a lot of stories, I would have preferred to see a broader focus on the story rather than singling out a freshman who is going through a big transition and doesn't need a lot of attention on every step he takes. If we are talking freshmen we have three of them and I am curious about their progress too.

a 30 lb weight loss is a good hook to hang a story on while nothing much is going on in the off season.

We all know that we have a guy, Hendricks, that has refused to work in the off season. So just the fact that a freshman did what he did on his own is refreshing

Talent and potential and 6-10 keep you on a college roster a lot of schools.

I don't see much talent, and if he doesn't want to work there is zero potential, so he needs to go. Reason #247 Whitford can't win.
