I just happened to notice that IUPUI has fallen into the dead freaking last position in the KenPom rankings, #358. They are being guided by Matt Crenshaw of the Jim Whitford coaching tree.

The Jim Whitford coaching tree is stellar. Billy Wright. Crenshaw.

The Jim Whitford coaching tree is stellar. Billy Wright. Crenshaw. Crenshaw is 1-16 at IUPUI, with his lone win against... Spalding? This is a quote from an article on the BSU Sports website about Billy Wright returning to BSU: "Wright coached Western Illinois for six seasons, winning 53 games." Who thought this is a good stat? That's under 9 wins a year.

The IUPUI job was not exactly a plum gig, but they were #263 last year (which is almost exactly where BSU is today). So, whatever his challenges may have been, Crenshaw has taken them down almost a hundred positions...to the point where it's simply not possible to go any lower in the ranking. Given my position that it is possible to judge coaches much earlier than most people want to...this is a bad, bad, BAD look for Crenshaw. If I were IUPUI AD, I would be looking in the direction of alternatives....TODAY.
From the Crenshaw bio at the IUPUI site: "Before his return to IUPUI, Crenshaw spent three seasons as an assistant at Ball State, serving as the Cardinals' co-defensive coordinator..... In addition, Ball State had the MAC's best scoring defense during the 2019-2020 season and captured a West Division championship before the season was halted due to COVID-19."
So Crenshaw learned from the master on how to fluff up one's resume with bogus "accomplishments" from within the Special Olympics world that was the MAC West.

You guys just don't realize how long it takes to "change the culture" and install that "sophisticated motion offense."
The Whitford coaching tree takes some time to bear fruit. However, IUPUI fans can probably almost taste the sweetness of paying a hundred grand to play in some "post-season" tournament. Only another 4 years Jags fans.

Good point mills. If IUPUI will just listen to the "supportive" section of their fanbase and not make any snap judgements for nine years or so, Crenshaw is in the process of building the program to where it will...uh...still exist, and...uhhhh...have a chance to win a couple games in the easier portions of the schedule. You know...clicking on all fires.
Well anyway, since IUPUI probably can't afford to outbid everyone for an expensive coach, and there is no other possible way to win, so they just need to stop whining and be happy with their win over Spaulding.

I bet Whitford is kicking himself that IUPUI wasnt on the schedule this year. Picking the weakest possible SOS is pretty hard but when it’s in our own backyard with a regular opponent it’s gotta be hard to have missed it.

It's hard to believe a guy like Whitford would surround himself with anything less than the best available coaching talent. Which leads me back to a previous thread, I don't think Whitford had a choice when Darner was added to his staff.

And Whitford has developed such a strong culture that 3 of his best players couldn’t get away from his program fast enough after year 8. Solid!

It’s true that Darner doesn’t quite fit the Whitford assistant model of hiring guys who’ve not really done anything anywhere. So, it’s possible whit was “encouraged” to take him. The only other thing I can think about Darner landing with us is something happened at Green Bay that made other schools reluctant to hire him right now. There was silence from both sides after he was let go.
