The progress made by Sparks is truly remarkable. He certainly isn't playing like any freshman center that I can remember. His pivot spin on the post was lightening quick. He has exhibited a soft face up jumper recently. Scary potential. Fun to watch! Glad he plays for Ball State! He’s the key to the whole thing. A joy to watch.

Very happy with the W and the students were great. But before we start the circle jerk fest, let’s not forget the M.O. of this program and roster. When we shoot well against a superior opponent at home, we generally are in the game and occasionally win. When we hit the road against the Sisters of the Poor (directional Michigan’s and Northern) we probably win if we shoot average. Everything else is predicated on shooting lights out like we did last night.
I can’t recall if FOY is a coach or media vote. If it’s coaches Sparks will win hands down. If it’s media then Farrakhan could get it because the media guys are clueless and usually just vote for the highest scoring average. Sparks is a bonafide stud. I pray that Nitwhit won’t ruin him because I promise he will try to turn him into a perimeter 4 and have him start shooting treys.
Props where due. We actually didn’t collapse this time when Toledo came back and took the lead. They are really good and probably beat us 8 out of 10 times but we played with some poise except the stretch where they tied it. Thankfully the horrid officials burned Turdledo worse than us for a change.

I certainly have done my share of Whit criticism but this was one of his better-coached games with substition patterns. Thet got off to a great start, could have folded afte losing the lead in the second half but took the punch and regained the lead. Someone said less Brown, more Windham, I say less Brown, more Sellers. Can this game mean momentum for the next game? No way. yes all meaningful bench minutes dependant on position should go to sellers

This year we have some athletes who need to become more a defensive factor. If we are going to move up and play regularly with those top MAC teams we need to do more than shoot lights out. If we could rely more on making stops and producing some turnovers, huge difference. Plus our shooters could get some transition 3's we don't get now. More important we'd be able to survive when not shooting well for a stretch. Not sure we'll see that this year, but it's a real wild card in big games. To me it's how those top MAC teams have beaten us over the last few years. We tend to think they overpower us with size inside, maybe more than is the case. Their bigger more aggressive guards take us out is what I am seeing. Thomas has some length and athleticism but I just have not seen him use that as much as he could, maybe because he is usually guarding a bigger guy. A bit more of a pressure defense might suit him?
Sparks may not ever be an elite defender but he is so critical on offense we need to keep him out of foul trouble.
Pearson has to get minutes to spell Thomas. Although I want to see him get some PT for the future, Jihad is not a special athlete and although he can improve with experience and some physical development over time, he's too much a freshman to be anything now but a good sized reserve, and is not a force now on either end. Cochran, Jacobs and Sellers are the guys who have to all play hard and make a difference, and if we could add in Windham as a defender(?), then, we could do way more on D than we have seen. I am not expecting the Lukes to be big enough or athletic enough to be a force, but they can be opportunistic get out on the break if 4 other guys get it going on D.

Someone said less Brown, more Windham, I say less Brown, more Sellers. Can this game mean momentum for the next game? No way. yes all meaningful bench minutes dependent on position should go to sellers He has to be considered a starter in minutes for us to be good. Along with Cochran, Jacobs and Bumb.
I can see why we might ride Bumb the longest even when he is not hitting the basket, and maybe Cochran gets a bit more PT since he is the bigger harder match up for the opponents and bigger on defense as a wing. I like Jacobs when he is playing well, but Sellers should get at least equal minutes it appears. Brown, Windham have to be better shooting threats off the bench to get minutes, probably standing in for Bumbalough who we should not be playing as many minutes as we do.
IF, IF, IF Windham would play as big as he is and defend, he and sellers would be a powerful bench. Like Sam and KC Jones, for you old timers...
Pearson, and Jihad could conceivably take minutes away from the 3G look, but realistically they have to step it up to just be decent subs for Thomas and Sparks.

Time for me to eat some crow, for 1 game at least. Nice win by the Cards! I'm with you on eating crow; however, almost every season Whitford has one tease game. A game where his team will beat someone they aren't suppose to beat and it's often one of the Toledo games. I hope it's not the case this year. That they will actually play again like this several more times in February and March. Just not counting on it. The key, other than shooting 48% from 3-point, was only 7 turnovers. When was the last time we had single digit turnovers? I don't think it's happened this season. A big part of that was not playing the 2 Big's, Jihad and Pearson. Those two would have produced another 4 to 6 TO's if they had played. The rotation change everyone has alluded to. Whitford got away with not playing them because Toledo is so small up front, especially after Shumate got into foul trouble. Against a bigger team, I don't think only playing Thomas and Sparks will work. Sellers if by far the team's best defender. He's going to get increased minutes as Whitford puts him on the opposing team's best guard or wing.

. Thankfully the horrid officials burned Turdledo worse than us for a change. What was with all the “flop” calls last night? Toledo was just bad last night with those. I think Kowalcyk sneezed and Rollins fell over in front of him to get that one because there was not a Card close enough on that 3 ball to have caused that. Several times watching Rocket players doing really silly things after a made basket, delays, arguing a call or smart comments. Came back to bite them. Officials are tasked with the Point of Emphasis on flopping this year. Saw several legit charges in the center of the chest this year get flop warnings. OTOH I have also seen refs ignore legit flops with the "play on" sign. I suppose it depends on the POV of the one wearing the stripes and who is in the house to evaluate him.
When did acting become such a big part of the game?

I do feel the last one on UT wasn’t a good call. Sparks flat dropped his shoulder and bulled into the guy. Thought it was a no call at best or a charge on Sparks. Worked out well for us.

It’s the soccer influence a lot of this generation has grown up with I. E. The flop issue.

I don’t know if Reggie Miller invented the flop, but he perfected it.
